KP, Tommy's Birthday and March Madness
« on: March 14, 2007, 06:47:44 PM »
Skirting the issues of Off-Topic topics, this post grabs the KP pre-announcement announcement that Tommy snuck in response to his birthday topic ... (and Tommy being who he is, can always delete it if so desired ...)

Thanks once again to all!

More importantly, today I've been working on the King's Putter Cup stuff and I want to thank two people in this, one Jeff Brauer for brokering some peace for some of my past indiscretions and to our architect/host, Damian Pascuzzo. All it took was a really hard thrown catch basin to the side of the head!

The details aren't finalized yet but plan for aiming the G5 for Santa Barbara sometime in May. We are calling this one the "Sideways" Tour as the Central coast has some delectable vineyards and unbelievably delicious Santa Maria-raised beef all popularized by the movie, Sideways.

We'll be high-lighting two courses--Damian's much ballyhooed Monarch Dunes and his ultra-strong/best design I've played of his to date, La Purisima. (How this course doesn't gain more recognition for what it is is beyond me, and the closing holes as tough as any as you''ll find in California.)

I want to apologize to Greg Tallman here and right now because we were going to try for Cabo, but after some discussion with a "team" of crack KP veterans, the popular opinion was to keep it in California, and mostly because of the issues as far as passport and costs. We want to keep it as affordable as possible and a trip down to Baja--which someday we would all like to make, would be more feasible. Still we hope the invitation will always be there. Thanks Greg!

How sneaky.

Many a match will be decided by the swirling winds of the 17th at La Purisima, matched only by the befuddling gusts of Amen Corner.

I am eager for more of this to shape up.

And thank you to Mr. Benham for digging this from the depths of the thread.

Right, Tommy has always spoken highly of Damian's work.

Hey Mike B., who is Santa Clara going to hire as their BB coach now that they got rid of a good one?  Brad Holland?

I know most of you guys love La Purisima.  Frankly I think it is a silly driving course on about 7 holes.  Tell me where you are supposed to hit it on 4, 7, 11, and that weird par 5 on the back 9?
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

Lynn S:

Speaking for the common alma mater of Mr. Benham and myself, well...although we are letting our "good" coach retire, there are lots of wild rumors for the successor but the hope is whoever the coach is, the support is stepped up - such received by Davey over the years was just pitiful - and this will be what makes or breaks us from this point forward.

Kevin does ask a perfect question though.  Davey was good in all things except results.

Happy to discuss off-line.  You may be very sorry you mentioned this.   ;D

I think Jim Harrick is available!  Go Dawgs!  Sic 'em!  Woof! Woof! Woof!

Look out Air Force.  The Bulldogs are back in post-season play (NIT)!

Steve Lavin made a half-hearted run for the USF job a while back. Not sure if that was more due to his Dad connection to the school or a real desire to coach again.

My guess is even if SCU wanted him they could not match the money ESPN is paying him for just a few months work each year.

Ric Majers (check that spelling!) formerly of Utah would be a great get for SCU but once again not clear he really wants to get back into coaching.

Lynn,

Dick is a good coach and a great guy but unfortunately, college sports isn't a family business anymore.  The Gonzagian of the WCC is in full bloom.

If you want to have a nice little program that develops fine young men and a legacy coach can teach, then DII might be a better choice.

Santa Clara was a lot closer to UCLA in the late '60s then they are now, and there shouldn't be any reason why the Broncos should be closer.

Lavin and Majerus are not viable candidates for the job.

JK:

Steve Lavin is absolute slime, and was a horrible coach at UCLA.  They couldn't wait to get rid of him at the end.  If we hire him, I divorce all ties and root for St. Mary's.  But you're right, we couldn't afford him anyway - thank God.

Majerus has indicated several times in the past that a place like St. Mary's is his "dream job", so perhaps he would be interested in a little less bucolic Santa Clara.  But he took the USC job briefly and then turned it down; not only can we not afford him, but I can't see why he'd come here anyway.  The hotter rumors are he goes to USD (which also has an opening now that they fired Brad Holland); that would seem a bit more likely to me, as they are willing to go a bit further than SCU financially.

A more concrete rumor was Montgomery, but his price is also too high, and word is if he comes back to coaching it will be for a much larger program - either Oregon (if Kent is fired and Few from Gonzaga doesn't want to move); or Gonzaga (if Few goes to Oregon as rumored, and they buy out their asst. coach Grier who has it in his contract he gets the job when Few leaves); or AZ, if Lute decides to retire.  Monty will not be coming to the Mission Campus.

Much more likely are Grier from Gonzaga (if he gets tired of waiting for Few or gets bought out); Reynaud from Cal (top assistant); Kurt Rambis; or some other assitant from a top program.

In any case, as I say, who the coach is wouldn't seem to matter as much as IF we step up commitment, as promised.  Us alums are watching anxiously.  We obviously have no real hoops to watch this time of year, for the 12 year in a row...

ps - I said Lynn would regret asking this.  Jeez I like golf, but I LIVE for SCU hoops.  ;)

pss - well said, elder brethren alumnus.  ;D

SCU basketball?  What have they ever done?  And that Nash guy, he's way over-rated and should be playing in a Euro league somewhere.   ;D

I'm into college hoops too Tom, but nowhere near as feverish and intense as you...

St. Stephen of British Columbia showed the world last night what a true MVP is, if he hadn't thousands of times already.

Yes, I rather fancy him.   ;D

But you're right, beloved SCU hasn't done squat in years.  Thus we make coaching changes.

Yeah he's the real deal and great for the game if you ask me.  I really wish he could have been around in the NBAs heyday in the 80s.  I would have loved to see how he would have stacked up against Stockton, Magic, DJ and Isiah in thier primes.

As to SCU, I still remember that tourney game years ago when they took out Arizona as a 15 seed if my memory serves me right...that was an epic game.

But I guess everyone in the league must be happy now that the Jugernaught Zags have cleary slipped a rung or two.

Ah yes... St. Stephen did contribute to that glorious win over AZ oh so long ago.  Yep, a 15 over a 2.  I'd say that's a pretty large upset - wouldn't you agree?

My mine shivas poo-poohed it in a long ago lenghty battle in here.  Memories.....

As for the Zags, well they have slipped a little, but not enough to come back to the rest of the league.  They still won it this year, with their worst team in a decade - and they are loaded for next year.  Sigh.....

A 15 over a 2 is a massive upset of the David and Goliath proportions.  Its not anywhere near to a 15 beating a 2 in golf which is no big deal.

Was Nash on that team that beat the Cats??  My time has passed by.

Good point about the zags, losing Morrison was a big blow, but they should be well stocked for next year.  I'm surprised Few hasn't jumped yet, but maybe he's too smart to see all the other high profile college coaches who have jumped to the NBA and failed miserably....

Sounds like a familiar WCC plight, my Waves have a new coach and hopes of returning to 1983 glory. At least I can chear for the Irish this year, I imagine you route for SoCa when Santa Clara is out.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

If it wasn't for you and Shack spreading the good karma on your Waves, the Broncos would have at least had some post-season action this year.

And Kalen, I don't hope that the Zags fall a rung or two, I would prefer that SCU climb 2 or 3 rungs to be equal to them

MB & TH

I seem to remember that when SCU dropped football one of the reasons stated was so they could focus more on other sports like basketball. What happened? Is it an AD issue or school management. It does not seem to an outside observer that they did any such thing.

SCU has a proud history of basketball even prior to Nash and I would expect with the right program in place they could once again

Tim:  My USC allegiances extend only to football.  I am Santa Clara through and through re all other sports.  I could give a rat's ass about the Trojans this week or any other time outside of the fall on the gridiron.  Given we (SCU) don't have football and I was a USC football fan long before attending SCU, I believe this makes some logical sense.  But anyway, your Waves do plow through the hoops coaches, that's for sure.   ;)

Kalen:  oh yes. St. Stephen was a freshman on the glorious team that conquered Lute's minions - hit key free throws down the stretch.  They fouled the freshman thinking he'd crack... little did they know.

John K:  we dropped football because the NCAA mandated that if you are D-I in any sport, you must be D-I in all.  That was a rules change made back then.  Our choice was create a ceremonial D-IAA football program with zero chance of ever making the playoffs, all at a tremendous cost (see USD for an example of that), or drop the sport.  I fully support SCU's decision.  Mr. Benham has other ideas, I believe.   ;)  In any case, yes, the idea was the money that would have gone to football would go to other sports, and I believe that has panned out - our soccer for sure became big-time only after football was dropped, and many other sports have improved.  Sadly those resources were apparently not devoted to hoops... and in any case no greater success has resulted.  But you're right, we do have a relatively proud hoops program and the hope is that such does return.  What we've always had to be proud of is class, dignity, graduation rates, churning out solid citizens... that has never changed.  The hope is that some competitive success returns along with this.

Hey Bandwagon Tom,

I'm sure you were a fan of USC long before all those championships   ::)  ;)

While i'm no fan of USC, I would much rather see them get thier licks and wins over those over-rated east coast schools.  8)

Kalen, if rooting from a team from 1966 (age 3 for me) until the present means hopping on a bandwagon, then call me a bandwagonneer.

And Ryan, I was enjoying USC football championships long before your birth.  So pipe down.  But wanna trade seasons last year?  Yeah, I thought so.
