Aerial views of Musgrove Mill

I just got a couple pictures emailed to me from a plane flying over my club, Musgrove Mill GC in Clinton, SC.   The pictures were taken by one of the staff members that has flying for his hobby.

I thought they turned out pretty cool, and I am sure there are a couple of folks out there who have played Musgrove that can figure out the routing.  

Tommy W. I specifically thought of you, and thought you might enjoy these pictures.  I wasnt sure if you got copied on the original email from Jeff or not, so I posted them here.





When I have more time I will help explain the routing if anyone is interested.

I have not seen these pictures before you posted them.  They are great shots.  MM is stsill in my top ten places to play.  It is a course that grows on you the more you play it.

Mark, the only house you see from the course is the clubhouse.  Even the cottages are set back int the woods.  Of course MM is int the middle of nowhere.

Daryl, is that the difficult par 3 #7 in the left center of the second photo?  It ate my lunch like a schoolyard bully!  :o

Tim, it's a very good course based on my one tour with Daryl, with a 9th and 18th of very high degree of difficulty.  Probably the best Palmer design I've played.

OK, lets give this a try.  I hope the numbers are big enough that ya'll can read them.  I have tried to put the numbers for the corresponding holes at the green site so that you can tell how they play.  I also have tried to show relative shot angles, sometimes exaggerating the angles for a third shot on a par 5 for instance in order to make sure you could tell it was a par 5, etc.

Actually it probably makes sense to look at the second picture first since that gives you a better view of the front nine (in yellow) very nicely.  The top picture gives a pretty good view of the back nine (in red).



I put the range and short game area on here also so you can get a feel for that.  Obviously the clubhouse is situated on the hill behind the 9th and 18th greens.



Unfortunately the fun little par 4 15th does not appear on either of these pictures.  It obviously is located just off the right hand side of the top picture.

Musgrove is a good test...without your 'A' game, bring some extra balls...tough, but fair...from the tips, much like the Honors Course....slope probably 150+/-....definitely worth playing if in the area...enjoy..

What you can't see from the aerial pictures are the undulations and elevation changes.  They are as important as the routing.

Musgrove appears to be one of the best Golf/Whitetail Hunting venues. Turboe, can I put a corn pile out around the 3d tee?

Rob, 9 is a three shot par five.  There are four teeing areas.  Two are "back" tees.  The carry is about two hundred yards but the fairway must be 60 yards wide.  The next tee up only requires about 150 yard carry to the same wide fairway.  The second shot is more demanding and the green is elevated about 30 feet above the fairway.  It is a very good hole.

Having played the K Club they are not remotely similar.  The greens as MM are more demanding and smaller.  The tee shots at MM are not as demanding because the fairways are plenty wide.  The shots into and around the greens are very demanding.  Whenever I leave after a week there, my short game has improved dramatically because the player needs to be creative and precise areound the greens.

Tommy meant to say it was a three shot par 5.  Unless his game has gotten a little better since the last time I played with him, I think it still plays as a par 5 for him.

Tom's comments are spot on though.  MM tee shots are very forgiving, it is the angles produced by those tee shots and how the approaches play because of where your tee shot ends up that make it so interesting.
