Finest Courses of Asia & Australasia book
« on: March 09, 2007, 05:39:16 PM »
I ran across this book by James Spence on another thread and think it may be of interest. Click on books at the bottom.

The book is new enough to include Barnougle, but not St. Andrews Beach.

I think St Andrews Beach is older than Barnbougle.  Not as openly public accessable, but older.

It definitely isn't, James.

Not only is St Andrews Beach still not officially open, it wasn't grown in enough to play without teeing up, until March 2005, and even then was a little rough in a few places, although now it is possibly the best conditioned course around.

Barnbougle opened officially in December 2004.

Mark

did Barnbougle start 'real construction' before St Andrews Beach?  It appears from your post that Barnbougle was open for play before St Andrews Beach.

James,

Despite having read the Barnbougle book back to front several times, I cannot recall if it is mentioned when construction started at Barnbougle and the length of time it took.

The Gunnamatta course was started in November 2003, from memory, but was not playable until mid-December 2004 without teeing up, by which time Barnbougle had well and truly been opened.

St Andrews Beach is still not officially open.  Something to do with having a proper facility to dispose of chemical washdown from the maintainence area.
