PV (Puerto Vallarta) Golf?
« on: March 02, 2007, 09:51:21 AM »
I'm headed to Puerto Vallarta later this month. It looks like the most recent threads on Puerto Vallarta are a couple years old, so I wonder what the current Treehouse skinny is on golf in PV. It looks like Vista Vallarta and Punta Mita may be worthwhile. Anything new?

Thanks.

Doug,

The golf in Vallarta is decent enough but not great.

Of the Vista Vallarta courses most prefer the Weiskopf. Punta Mita is a wonderful resort with good golf.. not great but good. Not sure I would make the drive out to play that versus another closer to the city.

In order of preference excluding travel considerations

Punta Mita
Vista Vallarta (Weiskopf)
Vista Vallarta (Nicklaus)
El Tigre
Flamingos
Marina Vallarta
Mayan Palace

Thanks Greg. Based on the paucity of responses, I'd say PV is not a major venue for GCAers...

Doug,
I generally don't like to travel south of the border, so I haven't been down at all for golf. However, I do want to get down to take a look at Las Palomas by Forrest Richardson and Tom Doak and his guys are doing something down south. I have no idea where either of these places are in relation to PV. Have a good trip and enjoy the sun. 8)

Doug,

Of note at Punta Mita... You may want to play early and try to see if you could tour the second course which is in the early stages of construciton at this time.

A 3+ hour car ride south would take you to some better golf... El Tamarindo... also Isla Navidad in the same area but I don't find it discernably better than the Vallarta courses. They are near Manzanillo.

Doug,
I was catching up on some old reading and came across this is GOLF magazine. Joe Passov recommends Punta Mita Course (Nicklaus) at Four Seasons ($185), Vista Vallarta (Nicklaus)($163) which hosted the 2002 World Cup, Weiskopf's track at Vista Vallarta ($153) is a solid bet too. More value-oriented golf is Marina Vallarta ($88-121) or Flamingos GC ($110). Have fun.
