1960 Masters Telecast
« on: March 06, 2007, 05:13:10 PM »
I am looking forward to the rebroadcast of the 1960 Masters, which will be shown before this year's final round.

Story about 1960's Masters Rebroadcast

Of particular interest will be the look of the course.  As noted in the Sickle piece, the course looked very different in 1960.

Quote
Pass the hedgeclippers. Augusta National looks surprisingly mangy compared to the way it's maintained now. Even on shots from the fairway, you wonder, "Didn't they mow the grass?" The areas around the bunkers were intentionally left rough and uncut, a very different look from the sharp-edged, perfectly manicured conditions today. The greens were still Bermuda grass and much, much slower.

That looks like a must record program.  I didn't see anything about Nantz getting approval from the "toon-a-mint" committee regarding this footage.  I would have thought they would somehow be involved.

This will be awesome. The DVR will be running!!

Reading the bit about Arnie smoking reminds me of my favorite picture of all time  -- him and Hogan smoking on the 2nd tee at the Masters. Someone surely knows the pic....

I was talking to John Derr at the Carolinas Golf Show about this and he was surprised to hear this.  John was a longtime announcer for CBS and was on the 15th hole in 1960.  He is going to receive an award from Augusta National this year during the tournament which is much deserved.
