Invitation to Pensacola Country Club
« on: March 01, 2007, 11:00:54 PM »
Ran recently was kind enough to publish the "My Home Course" profile I wrote about our new course at Pensacola Country Club.

This course really exemplifies the good work Jerry Pate's design group, under the direction of Steve Dana, is doing these days.  As described in my review, this is pretty much a new course because of the extensive drainage work that had to be done.

Check out the profile at the bottom of the "My Home Course" listing.

Golf Inc Magazine recently named Pensacola CC "Best New Renovation" of 2007, a great honor for Steve Dana and Jerry Pate Golf Design.

I have made arrangements to host a limited number of GCA members at Pensacola Country Club for the weekend of May 4-6.  We will have a dinner Friday night, golf at PCC Saturday, and a road trip to coastal Mississippi for golf Sunday at The Preserve, Jerry's new course over there.  We will make arrangements for rooms Friday night in Pensacola and Biloxi (at a nice casino!) Saturday night.  We'll play early Sunday so that afternoon flights will be possible out of Pensacola later that day.

There may be time for a Saturday afternoon tour of Pate's new course near Pensacola in the Jubilee development.

Check out Jerry Pate's website at www.jerrypate.com/golfdesign/ for his portfolio including PCC and the Preserve.

Please send me an email if you are interested.  I'm limited to 12-15 GCA members as we have to have a PCC member play with each three GCAers.  Email is billmcb320@yahoo.com.  Ya'll come see us, there may be some grits involved.  ;D

Cheers,
Bill McBride

Thanks for posting Bill  - it is an interesting tale and it would be nice to take you up on it one day. I like the finishing green with its elevated shape and the boats behind....

I'll do it if you are truly committed!

Of course I'd probably be imprisoned, which would be worse than committed, for smuggling!

Nice write up on your club.  I got your e-mail and will have to do some probing and polling with domestic management to see if a road trip is possible at that time...  If I can make it, I might want to slide over to Houston to see Nuzzo as well.   So, I might just drive down.  ;) ;D
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I'm traveling to FL, and took a peek to see how far you are... Pensacola is almost closer to Houston than Tampa....
I hope to be there some day soon.

The I-10 tour can take quite a while!  It's probably 8 hours Houston-Pensacola.  I drove non-stop from New Braunfels to Pensacola after a Jerry Jeff Walker concert at the Gruene Hall, but that was a special occasion!  8)

Looking forward to seeing you, JB, I think that gets us up to 7 or 8.

Pensacola is 8 to 8.5 hours from Houston no matter how you skin it, unless Jerry Jeff motivates one to put the petal to the metal. It is 4.5 to 5 for us Lafayette types.

To any of you who have not had the chance to visit Pensacola Country Club since the renovation, I wholeheartedly recommend it.  Jerry Pate and crew did a great job and most importantly for individuals who participate on this website, it is playing VERY firm and fast.  The tight turf conditions and design allowed for much creativity in approaching the greens.  On four separate occasions I played a forty to sixty yard bump and run shot with a 7 to 5 iron.  The course has a terrific punchbowl long par four 17th, a tough long redan and an edenesque par three finisher on the bay.  Great stuff!!!

Bumping this up - we have room for several more for this weekend, May 4-6.

Golf Inc magazine has named Pensacola CC Best Renovation of 2007.  Forrest Richardson was on the panel that made the selections, thanks Forrest.

Bringing this back to see if anyone else is interested in joining what currently looks like a group of 10 or so.  We can handle a few more.  Here's the schedule:

Friday May 4 - travel to Pensacola.  I will book hotel rooms as required in the newly reopened Grand Hotel for Friday night.  Cocktails at McBride's home, dinner somewhere casual.

Saturday May 5 - golf at Pensacola Country Club with Jerry Pate Design Group architect Steve Dana.  After the round we'll have lunch at PCC, then visit the Pate group's new course under construction nearby.  Then we'll drive 1.5 hours west to Biloxi and spend the night at the casino that owns The Preserve, a new Pate course over there.   http://www.preservegc.com/view.asp?id=466&page=14419#
Dinner, gambling, etc.

Sunday May 6 - golf at The Preserve fairly early so we can return after golf to Pensacola for outbound flights.  Delta has flights to Atlanta at 4:25 p.m. and 6 p.m., should be able to make 4:25 p.m. and definitely 6 p.m.

Those who live west and are driving can just head west after golf in Biloxi.

Let me know who may be interested.  billmcb320@yahoo.com

Mike Hendren played PCC with me today and said it was the best new course he's played in some time, very classical in style with fast and firm fairways.   His round included a deuce at the par 3 #18 with a nifty shot that finished in tap in range.

Today's "frozen Hendren tour" took place in near 80* shorts weather!  It was truly a chamber of commerce day.  8)
