Matt, they used slag at Old Works in Montana, and they had some ornamental grasses growing in it. You should be able to find this stuff wherever there has been extensive mining and metal production. I also thought it played great.

The project went west when the Icelandic economy tanked. There are still people interested in it, though, and Steve told me recently that he wouldn't be too surprised if it git going again. But don't hold your breath.

Thanks, Adam. Is the site East or West of Thorlakshofn? I was thinking of stopping in to play the golf course there, and would like to visit the Black Sands site while I'm in the neighborhood. This trip isn't until next year, but......planning ahead !

Kirk, it is a good while since I was there, but I believe it was east of the existing course. The sand was incredibly mobile. Steve tried to show me the routing, which he had staked out only a few weeks before, but one stake (I recall it was 16 green) was almost invisible as son much sand had blown onto that spot in the intervening weeks. A huge amount of dune stabilisation work was going to be needed to build the course

It would be great if that project happened some day.  I would love to build a course there myself, but the market is not exactly screaming for more courses in Iceland, it seems.
