Lady Greenkeepers

I thought you might like to read a Sports Illustrated feature that ran in the magazine this week regarding female golf course superintendents.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/golf/01/29/gp.silverman0205/index.html

My own expereince is that the business does not discriminate against women, but that most women simply are not interested. I wish more were, but a few are, and making it evident.

There ain't nuthin' like a dame.

the big wheel turns by the grace of God.

A sixth of our course staff are female (that is one out of six).  Cath has been terrific over her many years of service.  Its a delight to recognise her contribution at my club.

It was a real hoot to be able to inform some of the members that she had actually been in charge in an acting capacity for a month during some supt leave a couple of years ago

There's absolutely no doubt that Candice Combs and her assistant Bill Sinclair did a great job at Balboa Park GC. They took a dirt track muni and transformed it into a wonderfully maintained public course. Greens, tees, bunkers and fairways all improved dramatically when they took over in 1993. Saddly, when they were transfered to Torrey things spiraled downward imeadiately. Less than a year from when they left the place is a wreck; every aspect of course maintenance has suffered. Luckily things have improved at Torrey. I sure would like to get them back to Balboa after the Open!

Kathy Antaya is one of the most knowledgable superintendents in the business. She even went on to work for the USGA for several years.

Tony,

Where is Kathy now? I wrote a story on her when she became the first-ever female green section agronomist.

Anthony,
She is currently works for the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation while in search for the right superintendents position. She is such a wealth of information and any club with be lucky to have her! I met her about 8 years ago and worked for her while she was at The Meadows at Grand Valley State. She one of the most helpful and positive people.

I sat next to her at a GCSAA seminar in New Orleans.  Her enthusiasm and humor were very contagious.  She really loves her profession.
