Perfect "10s"
« on: January 28, 2007, 05:26:48 PM »
Following up on the thread re. Best Courses that Fail to Inspire,  Sean noted that Muirfield was one of about ten courses that achieved "10" status on Doak's "Confidential Guide ".  I was wondering what  the other courses were ?

I'm not sure if the book has been updated since its' 1996(I think) publish date, but does anyone feel that any of the chosen few do not  deserve to maintain their status?

Walter, here's one for you. Since the publication of TGC, Doak has given one "Brigadoon"-like course a rating greater even than his perfect "10."  Can you guess the course?

While I am at a distinct disadvantage not knowing which courses are in the top tier, a pure guess for an "11" would be Shinnecock.

Walter,

Off the top of my head, other courses that received a "Doak 10" are:

Crystal Downs
Merion
Cypress Point
St. Andrews (Old)
Royal Melbourne
Royal Dornoch  (I think)
National Golf Links of America
Pine Valley

I believe Sand Hills also receives an unofficial 10, after the book was published.

Walter,

Tom put his list of 10s on Matthew's GCA Rating Topic.

"Matthew:

I will submit something for you just so you can process a result and see how strange the results would come out with a system like this.

No one should hold me to these votes as absolute, I've just taken the "10"s from The Confidential Guide and put them in some kind of order for Matthew:

1-St. Andrews
2-Pine Valley
3-Royal Melbourne (West)
4-National Golf Links
5-Sand Hills
6-Cypress Point
7-Royal Dornoch
8-Shinnecock Hills
9-Crystal Downs
10-Ballybunion (Old)
11-Merion (East)
12-Muirfield

I was tempted to put Pacific Dunes somewhere in there but didn't."

...not sure what the brigadoon course is.
"And so," (concluded the Oldest Member), "you see that golf can be of
the greatest practical assistance to a man in Life's struggle.”

One of the composite courses, like Royal Melbourne?

Could the Brigadoon course be Foulpointe?
