9 and 10 par 3's?
« on: January 27, 2007, 01:01:04 PM »
I was just looking at Belle Haven in Virginia's website and it has 9 as a par 3 and 10. I haven't seen this before. Has anyone else?

The 9th and 10th at Pacific Grove Muni are par 3s.

The par of the first 10 holes is:

3-3-4-4-5-5-4-4-3-3

Spring Brook CC, just outside of Morristown, NJ has # 9 and
# 10 as par 3's. with the added bonus of # 11 as a par 3.

It's an unusual configuration, but, it works.

All three are good holes.

As are # 2 and # 14.

Concord GC, Sydney, has it's 9th & 10th as par 3's. The slight difference is, it's the 8th hole that returns you to the clubhouse, with the 9th & 10th taking you away from the clubhouse.

It feels like you are starting the back 9 with 2 par 3's, but one is the 9th & the other the 10th.

Thanks, guys!! Wow, I can't believe it. 3 in a row, Patrick? That is so unusual. How many par 3's on that course?

Andrew,

That reminds me of Torrey Pines, I played a junior tourney there a billion years ago and when I got my pairing, it said that I started on the 9th hole. I thought is was a misprint, but it wasn't. It felt like there were 3 par 5's on the 'back.'

Glen,

2 unusual things about golf in Sydney is, we has a disproportionate number of courses that return to the clubhouse at the 8th hole & have an 18th that is a par 3.

I can easily think of 7 courses in Sydney that return at the 8th & the courses that finish with a par 3 ( all courses that have a par of 70+ ) would be in double figures.

Glenn,

Five, I believe and everyone of them is a good hole.

# 9 and # 10 are both over water.

# 10 cost me dearly in a qualifier when I thought I hit a perfect shot, only to have it splash in a watery grave.

# 2 is a long difficult, down hill par 3.

# 11 is a long, difficult, up hill par 3.

# 14 is a downhill par 3 over water, but, the water isn't that much into play.  The original 14th green was to the right, and I beleive that it's still there, although, I don't know if they still play it on occassion.  The new 14th green is to the left.

Bob Farrell, who used to participate on this site, is a member there.  I know he was upset by the recent redesign of the golf course, which also had a collection of good par 4's with the 13th being spectacular.

If he's still lurking he could provide more in-depth analysis.

It's a fun course to play.
The 3rd hole is a double dogleg par 5 reachable in two, but, frought with danger.# 6 is a nice par 5, as is # 17.
# 16 used to and may still be a reachable par 5 on occassion, but, I think they changed it to a par 4 in light of the distance issue..

# 13 probably plays as difficult as the par 5's due to its length, some water far off the tee left, the uphill second shot, the deep bunkers, and the steeply tilted and contoured green.  It's a great hole.

If I lived near it, I'd want to join it.
But, I can say that about a lot of golf clubs

9 and 10 at Brancepeth Castle, County Durham are both par 3s and very, very fine ones too.  Both require a long carry (from recollection I'd say around 180 yards) and play over the deep ravine which runs through the course.  9 is a 210 (ish) hole, with a green diagonally presented running left to right, with a large tree in play short left.  Missing right or short isn't an option.  10 plays back over the ravine and is probably the easier hole, though again, missing short is very bad news indeed.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Edgewood CC in the Metro Detroit area has par 3 holes for #9 and #10.   This layout seems quite "regular" to me since this is where I learned the game as a caddy.
