Palm Desert/Palm Springs Public Golf
« on: January 24, 2007, 08:48:50 PM »
Can anyone recommend some public courses in the Palm Desert/Palm Springs area that permit walking?

Thanks.

Wow, the answer to that one might be none.  I am racking my brain to think of a truly public layout that allows walking and am drawing a blank.

Mitch, there are much better authorities but I found Cimmaron to be a decent public facility. Not sure if they allow walking or if they're still public or even open.

I've always enjoyed Robert Trent Jones Jr's Desert Dunes at the far western end of Palm Springs just north of I-10.

Unless it's really windy.  :o  Even then it's fun to aim 40 yards left, or to hit a 350 yard tee ball downwind followed by a 150 yarder into the wind.

Mitch:

Adam is correct about Cimmaron.  It is decent and worth a play.  I cannot confirm if they allow walking.

I would put The Firecliff Course at Desert Willow and Shadow Ridge near the top of public access courses in the valley.    Desert Willow is owned and operated by the city of Palm Desert.  Green to tee distances are relatively short.  Unfortunately, I  am not sure if they allow walking.

Escena is a new Nicklaus design near the airport that is pretty good, low-profile, so if they do allow walking it is not a bad trek.

Gentlemen: Thank you for your suggestions.  I'll check them out.  I'm staying at the Marriott Desert Springs (tagging along at a business meeting) and walking is not an option there.

Also the Classic Club. But Faldo's course is more apealing. Costs were equal.

Isn't that immediately across from Firecliff?  Not sure if they allow walking, but it's a nice layout and wouldn't be too bad a walk.

Come to think of it, aside from the Stone Eagle's and the Bighorn's of the area, outside of June-September there aren't many bad walks.

have you walked Stone Eagle?  Not as bad as you think, aside from 6 green to 7 tee.  You'd of course need a shuttle to the first tee...

Joe, I think you meant to address me, as I invoked Stone Eagle here.  I did not walk when I played, however I think few could call that a "walking course" or an "easy walk" - Is it walkable? Sure is...and remarkably so from what I saw for a severe site like that, but for someone looking for an "easy walk" I would look elsewhere.  Escena, for example, probably features less elevation change over its 150 acres than Stone Eagle has in it's flattest single square acre.

Stone Eagle isn't walker freindly, but its doable and there are walking paths through the desert.

Kapalua Plantation is likewise "doable" but that doesn't mean I'd recommend the trek to any friend of mine ;)

Well then...you have fun with that.  As one who walks and carries for his weekly round and enjoys this immensely more than being in a cart, I wish you all of the best walking Stone Eagle in August.

Who'd be in Palm Desert in August?  Not me.  I'm not sure I'll ever be there in January again.  My point is golf in a cart isn't golf at all.

Brian--
You've opened a whole can of worms that more then likely needs its own thread.  But the short of it is that Golf is a walking game.  Riding in a cart is the sad american version.  Golf is more then hitting the ball.....

I did not open the can just helped you. The bottom line is golf can be played in a cart and still be golf. This has been discussed many times on here i will not go any furhter the this, yes would I rather walk sure, do I walk everytime I play Hell no. Do I feel like I did not played  golf when I rode Hell no again. I am shocked you did not say cart discussions do not belong on a GCA website..  ;)

By the way I will be walking in Bandon in a month... ;D ;D

Why not get a caddy/cart thing?

That way you could walk any course, and just have the caddy drive, yet on long walks you could jump in for a ride.

Sure its not something I would suggest everyday, but then again it is a doable alternative to taking a cart where you can still walk, plus you dont have clean your clubs or golf balls or anything..

I would support the Cimarron idea. I walked it a few years ago and the guys in the shop were not offended by my request! The same cannot be said at other places in the desert. The course is decent and is also "relatively" cheap.

As far as a course, I would recommend Landmark (renamed Terra Lago or something) over in Indio.

Desert Dunes; stay away as it is in offensive condition. I played it last week. :'(
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

Desert Falls is considered semiprivate and would be a good walking course.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.
