Steve,

I must have missed it, how does that picture prove the architecture at Nanea is better than the Plantation course?

Slag,
Kahuku's a thrill. Pure golf in a lavalava and bare feet.
Plantation is probably #1 but my favorite's are Mauna Kea for it's classic architecture, Wailua Municipal on Kauai for the way it's back nine(fmly front 9) uses the land despite that ugly fenced in reservoir on 17, Kiele, which by the way is going to redo 14 and 15 to take advantage of the topography and views on 14 and 15 of Nawiliwili Harbor. Prince is a beautiful stretch of property, but is target golf at it's core.

Best golf (by island):
Plantation-Maui
Mauna Kea-Big Island
Palmer-Turtle Bay-Oahu
Kiele/Prince-Kauai
Kaluakoi-Molokai
Challenge-Lanai

Best values:
Wailua on Kauai
Pali GC on Oahu (poor man's Ko'olau)
West Loch on Oahu (terrible conditioning but very interesting holes-Robin Nelson)
Dunes at Maui Lani (follow the smoke to find Willie Nelson on the course)
Kaluakoi on Molokai.

Worst Values:
Hualalai
Poipu Bay

Slag and/or  Russell

Do either of you know about whether Kahuku is going to say open or not? I heard the land was sold to a FL developer and its existence in its present form is not certain...One possibility i heard was it may be stretched into an 18 hole course, luxury homes to be built nearby, etc...

Either of you know anything about this?

Evan, I haven't a clue but feel that it is a raw gem that could be ruined or transformed in to greatness. It's located on some interesting beachfront property and is the essence of old time simple golf with some interesting designs, but speculators will speculate and it is a relic in the way of big money potential.    I'd hate to see it go, both for its uniqueness and its affordability to the locals . . . but in the right hands?  (Somebody call Ken Bakst or Mike Keiser)

Interesting...two guys who normally get a hard time here - Jack and Tom W are praised.  Thats nice to see and shows that we are fair minded and give due credit where credit is due.
What do the rest of you think of Ko'olau?
Thanks.

I have played both the Plantation and Ko'olau and the views and finishing holes at the Plantation put it ahead, but I thoroughly enjoyed Ko'olau despite the high slope rating and the jungle feel of the course along with some good holes and some I wish I would get a chance to play again with course knowledge like the 18th, would have me place it #2 behind the Plantation.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Nanea is the only real deal in Hawaii.

I haven't played it either but understand this statement may be true.
