Fowler in the US
« on: January 13, 2007, 08:21:17 AM »
How did Fowler come to obtain contracts to build courses in the US?

C and W list:  Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles (1920 nle), Del Monte CC (r9 a9), Lake Merced (1922), Los Angeles CC (rt South Course 1911), Eastward Ho (1922)

Remodelled: Del Paso CC (1922), Allegheny (r, a3, 1922)

Do all but Ambassador Hotel still exist?  Given that most of these seem to be in 1922, how much time did he spend on site, or was it mostly sub-contracted? Is the 1911 date correct for Los Angeles CC?  How do these courses compare with his work in the UK?

Mark,

I think you can add to the list of Fowler courses in America :
Crystal Springs (see the recent thread : http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forums2/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=27476). Course opening : 1924

Fowler is credited too on the web for a redesign of Sequoyah CC (Oakland, California).

Sorry to bring this back, but these are genuine questions for which I should be immensely grateful for answers.

Mark,

Here is the best Eastward Ho article that I have seen, but I believe that Noel Freeman is working on one too:

Paging Sean Tully and Tommy Naccarrato.  These guys are the California historians.

For what it's worth, not only does the Ambassador Hotel golf course no longer exist, but as of last year neither does the hotel.

Mark, if you're looking to do online "legwork" there are a number of blogs dedicated to the demolition of the Ambassador.  The authors may possess documents relating to the provenance of the golf course.

One blog for example:
http://ambassadorhotel.blogspot.com/

A search will turn up others.
