Does anyone know what the policy is or cost to play Pinehurst #2.  When I go on-line or try and call they have all these packages.

If I wanted to just play the course, do I need to stay at the resort (or is it similar to Whistling where you can call ten days in advance if not staying there)?  Any info would be appreciated.

I believe it's $400 now for non resort guests, on a space available basis, I think if you are a resort guest you pay something in the 300's.  The way the resort works the pricing is their is a base rate to play 1,3,5,6.  And then there are up charges to play 2,4,7,8.

It may be just like Pebble these days in that you only have a day or two before you want to play (for non-guests) to make a time, thus leaving you with the remnants of all the other reservations.

Also, it was about $275-300 a few years ago when I was down there last, but it may have ticked up from there a bit.

The one time I played it, in 2002, we were lucky enough to be let on gratis as a golf team (paid caddy fees only) because our coach was friends with the son of a former USGA President...what a deal!

OK, maybe I got up on the wrong side of the bed, maybe I've just morphed into a curmudgeonly prick, but the term "the Deuce" for Pinehurst #2 is starting to make my skin crawl.  It seems to have become accepted lingo in here and man I equate it with "the Glass" for Spyglass in the pantheon of dorky course name shortenings.  Why do I picture a bunch of hacks insisting on playing the back tees while littering the course with cigar ashes and berating caddies on their way to triple-digit scores all very excited about their round on "the Deuce" which they've mentioned 50 times?

No offense to you Brian - it has become the accepted term I guess and like I say, I am a curmudgeonly prick, at least for now.

But does anyone else share distaste for this?

Pinehurst has historically run some good off season deals. I recall a $222 promotion including golf on #2 and accomodations in February. Otherwise be prepared to dig deep into your pocket!

They do permit guests who are not staying in their accomodations to play on on short notice based on availability. (Why would they turn away someone willing to shell out $300+ for an unused tee time?)

I have visited Pinehurst and played #2 off and on for about 40 years. Now I have lived here nearly 10 years. I have NEVER heard anyone here refer to the course as the "Deuce". It is always called #2 or Course #2. This discussion group is the only place I have ever heard the term "deuce" used. If you use it here, prepare to be laughed at.

If you want to play #2 the best deal out there is a package that they offer through Acura automobiles and tell them you want that package if you book before March 7.  It includes two nights, three days of golf, meals and a round on #2 including caddie and gratuity.

   Sorry, calling Spyglass "the Glass" is the same as Deuce in my book. Both are goofy to me, but so is the "Downs" which is how Crystal Downs is commonly referred to by at least some of its members. I like cold weather, so that is not affecting my opinion.
   
Regarding Pasa, I don't think many of us call it that in conversation, but it is just shorter to type. Not to many courses lend themselves to having their name shortened without leaving some question what you are talking about.

Also, I stumbled upon the best way to play Number 2 years ago.  I was won my Spring Golf Trip with the college friends, and we were playing one of the cheaper courses. It was early in the round, maybe hole 2 or 3, and the heavens opened up. My buddy and I dashed for the rain shelter to wait.
Well, the rain lasted for over an hour and everyone else gave up and went in eventually.  As soon as the rain stopped, my friend and I headed back and there happened to be a tee near where we had been waiting so we played on from there. Turns out, it was the second tee on Number Two. We had the course to ourselves, the course drains beautifully and we saved many shekels!
By the way, what's the first hole like?

I think it should be pronounced with a broad A, with "Pasa" to rhyme with "Bossa" as in Bossa Nova.  In the Latin style (as it is Spanish for "pastime.")

And a shortening like that is still dorky even if one pronounces it correctly.  Of course it's way worse if one pronounces it like the thing they'll be throwing in the NFL playoffs tomorrow... passa....

It becomes dorky due to overuse, perceptions of insider coolness.
