How is the book "Classic Golf Hole Design"?
« on: December 28, 2006, 02:26:52 PM »
Graves & Cornish, 2002 -- haven't seen it on any bookstore shelves.  Anyone have comments?  Is it worth $80?

Thanks.

It is a little less on Amazon.
It doesn't ever get pulled from my bookshelf - but I've never read it front to back.

Do you have the Daley Trilogy?
Cheers

I'd agree with Mike. Its quite a poorly set out book in terms of graphics and like all the books published by John Wiley has a text book feel with a preponderance of small, dark photographs. Still quite a bit of interesting information in there but the presentation does not do it justice. rarely looked at in my library.

I find it useful to trace the basics of hole types. The remarkable thing about this book is that Cornish was at least 90 when it was written — and Graves was very ill during the final editing. I think any golf design library is due a copy...

Greg - I'm not sure it's worth $80 - but then again I am a cheapass when it comes to golf books so insert that bias. I will say this:  I refer to it A LOT for discussions in here and other things - I find it to be a very valuable reference tool.  It lists the types of template golf holes and real-world examples of them better than any book I've ever heard of.  if that's important or interesting to you, then by all means get the book.  If it is pretty pictures or words of wisdom from modern-day architects you desire, then this book won't be for you.

I also own Paul Daley's series, and those are fantastic - they are just a totally different animal - far more fun, but far less of a reference tool.
