Re:Are their techniques for "hiding" the break in greens?

Jim,
If you have a "home course", I'd highly recommend a visit during a rainstorm  ;)  You will learn a lot.

Otherwise, I have walked many golf courses when the greens/course in general is surface draining and it is amazing what you can learn.

As far as "some alternative" way to learn to read greens, look to where they drain.  You can figure this out from the grass, the surrounds, the color,...etc.

Once you figure it out it would help you reading putts.

A great example of tough reads are the first 6 holes on Baltustrol Upper - many often break in the opposite direction as you think they will.
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

George,

In my single time playing Baltusrol Upper, I didn't have a problem with these greens.  But I sense the slope of the hill that the course sits on must make people think the greens will break more than they do in a certain direction and maybe less than they think in another direction.  Is this what you mean?
