Golf Books for Christmas

Merry Christmas everyone!

Did you receive any golf books for the holidays this year?  

I opened an unexpected copy of Alister MacKenzie's Cypress Point Club by Geoff Shackelford.  I was ecstatic!  Only time to browse so far, but the photography is fabulous.  I realized quickly how little I've actually seen of this course (other than 15-18.)

I can't wait to dive into this gem.

I also received a copy of Jim Finegan's "Where Golf is Great."  My wife remarked as I opened it that the rest of the family could expect to see me in about a week!    What a super book.  I like the way he adds information about what's to eat and where to stay in each area in the "Off the Course" section.

I always enjoy reading Jim Finegan's reviews because, like me, he is no longer even an average length hitter, so they are very meaningful.  

The other good thing about the book is that reading it is like a work out at the gym; the thing must weigh 10 pounds!

The Anatomy of a Golf Course is in my collection too, by Tom Doak.
I will be purchasing Dream Golf at Borders.

Pretty scary, I have all those books in my library too!

But have you seen the PBS "Jeeves" episode when Bertie loses his first round match in the annual Drones Club tournament to a twit who has a device on his shaft that buzzes when it's time to start the downswing?  Could be the funniest golf video of all time!     Bertie's first tee shot is a duck hook that fells a waiter with a tray full of champagne glasses outside the party tent nearby!  Even Jeeves' caddying skills can't save Bertie in that match.

Right now I am halfway through Pete Dye's "Bury me in a Pot Bunker".

I received British Golf Links, a reprint of the book from 1897 edited by Horace Hutchinson.  The photos are quite amazing, haven't had time to begin reading it yet, but it looks very interesting and educational.

Building Sebonack - Had to stop reading after the second Blue Mountain Coffee and Tia Maria and only look at the beautiful pictures after that.

I received a copy of Mark Rowlinson's update of The World Atlas of Golf from one of our daughters, which I had not seen in any of the bookstores here.  And our daughter didn't know that Pacific Dunes was in it ... although she was more impressed that Crystal Downs was in it, because she took lessons there this summer.

I am a big Wodehouse fan. I really enjoyed the Golf Omnibus I hope you guys do to. I took it to the beach last summer and had to force myself not to read to much in a day because I wanted so much to make it last.

I think it was in "The Clicking of Cuthbert" where I remember he had a conversation with  a Russian emigre. There was a tournament or bet where the Russian won umpteen million rubles or something or other and Wodehouse, in his inimitable manner explained, "That's something like seventeen shillings and sixpence."

In that one sentence, one got the idea that Pelham G. thought that the world had better believe that the pound and the English were by far the most important commodities around.

She said she read some of it in the bookstore and it sounded like something I would appreciate.

It's a really nice feeling to know I'm with the right woman.
