Uxoriously tethered....
« on: December 20, 2006, 11:20:13 PM »
In an earlier thread about lost opportunities to play some of the greats, it would seem that one's attachment/feelings to one's wife had a good deal to with turning down the chance of a lifetime.

Has anyone since had a detachment/ divorce where the sacrifice is more than doubly regretted?

No

I think my wife must be related to Tony Muldoon's wife (does your wife love dogs Tony?  Mine does).  She might not play golf herself, but she allows me to.

PS Bob, I love these words of recent posts eg 'uxoriously', 'perditious', 'albion'.  Did you get a new dictionary or thesauras for Christmas?

What's another word for "perditious?"  Given the Aussie source, I'm thinking ashes, given the dog theme I'm thinking dalmatians.........

Hehe;

I too have often been accused of overuse of my vocabulary. Being a life long reader, I have developed one. Being a life long liberal, I am not ashamed of it. Being a life long debater, I depise Howard Cosell, who always used his 'vocabulary' incorrectly [as well as stabbed his benefactor in the back when it was down: boxing].

Wanna make sumpin of it pard?  ;)

James,

I had a father, then later, an old Oxford don as a tutor, followed by a very smart lady teacher that would throw out words of which I had no knowledge. I looked 'em up and got hooked from an early age.

The Santa Clara boys tell me that the Jesuits there did the same thing.

Bob, just call it what it is - pussy whipped.

I was also fortunate as my ex felt that it was much better for me to play golf than to sit around the house watching TV.

I even got her to agree to move to Bandon before she ever saw it if only we could have figured out how to play there every day for a reasonable sum.  Unfortunately we couldn't.

I have been invited to spend the last weekend of January at Mountain Lake  8)  and then figured out the Saturday will be my 39th anniversary.

 :o :o

You can see what kind of wife I'm dealing with.  She said, "Oh what the hell," so I'm going.

Do you suppose she really meant it?  ??? ::)

Being married to you for 39 years is penance enough, of course she meant it.

If she didn't, think of all the money you'll save by not having to buy a 40th anniversary present.

Actually, she's being very nice to me these days as I have agreed to take the entire Familia McBride (including one boyfriend) to Italy for a week in May.

I tried to explain to her that the gorse would be in bloom in East Lothian and Fife, but she insisted on Tuscany.

Bill,

Spent ten days renting a place near Sienna five years ago. No golf.... however, if you can get away, have a look at this.

Josie and I spent a week in Sicily (Taormina) last month and there is a great course nearby--designed by Donald Steele and run by (shall I say) locals.  The wine is better than in Tuscany, too.

One of these days...

We have a special fondness for Lucca, 75 minutes west of Florence by train (and light years away from the madness that is tourist season in Florence as well).  So we've rented a large apartment with a terrace and I will set out each morning to find the best available local vino for dinner.

Bob, on our first trip to Italy maybe seven years ago, we stayed in a villa near Monteriggioni, five or six miles north of Siena.  It's the circular walled hill town with the towers all around, visible for miles.

Biil,

At the end of a day' sightseeing, we we pulled into the parking lot of beautiful church near Montepulciano. We had heard that the monks in residence sang Gregorian Chants as good as anything one would hear in Italy.

I sat down in the back of the church, sunbeams cut through the gloom inside and I felt relaxed and contented. The monks were performing in a balcony above the floor of the building behind a screen. After a while, I got up and walked slowly to the front of the church near the altar. Something, some click or sound got my attention...it was then I realized there were no monks chanting behind a screen but a very fine CD playing the 'Best of Gregorian Chants' which I had at home.

A man's job is to try to figure out what a woman is saying.

In this particular situation, you will pay the price for a missed 39th anniversary, take it from me, who asked his wife if it was ok to go to Ireland on a guy trip on our 36th anniversary, and she said "Yes, of course....have a great time"

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Bill, Lucca is a favorite of my wife and I. We walked around the entire wall. It was also neat to see  the cafe where Puccini spent many days. Just talking about it makes me want to plan on our next trip. San Giminaggno (I think I spelt it right) although crowded, is beautiful as well. Great gelato there!

The wall is about 2.5 miles so is a nice brisk stroll.  Lucca is much more of a city, although on the small scale, than San Gimigano which I enjoyed but you wouldn't want to stay there.  Lucca is a great base for day trips as well.  An hour to Pisa, two hours to Siena, 75 minutes to Florence, only 90 minutes to the Cinque Terre.  Can't wait!

I usually insist my wife leave her boyfriend at home....

Have fun!

I am tethered - more by my little man than my wife - and wouldn't trade it for all the golf in the world.
