Sean, Nairn is my #2 course up north. It is a wonderful place that sans RAF takes your breath away with the greatness of the holes. Brora is Brora but Nairn is step above in my opinion.

Tiger

You are entitled to your opinoin, but you are wrong. Nairn has a tough time cracking the top 5 in the North of Huntly division of Scottish courses (ahead of it are, or may be--Dornoch, Brora, Skibo, Lossiemouth (Old) and Peterhead, at least).  Sean is correct in trying out the true hidden gem that is Golspie.

I'm embarking on my first golf trip to Scotland next May and will play Western Gailes, Troon, Prestwick, Turnberry, Gleneagles Kings, TOC, Jubilee, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.   :D

Then I'll work on some locals I haven't yet seen, but the hall pass might be fully punched after my Scotland foray.   :'(

Garland I am in deed a most fortuitous fellow.  Two years ago for a family weekend she found a house in Lincolnshire, with a swimming pool.  “Oh don't worry not all of Lincolnshire is flat this is on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and it's supposed to be lovely.  And with this house you get £10 off the local course in a village called Woodhall Spa".

This is the same woman who in discussing family holidays last year said “you know I’ve always fancied Scotland” (Dornoch/North Berwick) and the year before booked a house 400 yards from Golf de Biarritz le Phare.

I swear on my original copy of The Badminton Library ‘Golf’, not a word of this is made up. ;D ;D

Tony
and you have the nerve to comment on my abilities to persuade my better half to holiday in golfing regions ;)

So far 2007 promises:
GCA East Lothian trip in March - Musselburgh Old (repeat visit but first with hickories :)); North Berwick (umpteenth repeat but never tire of it) and Muirfield (first time).

Golf trip to Majorca - no idea what we will encounter but will all be first timers

Buda Cup V - repeat visits to Alwoodley and Moortown

I'm currently working longer term (2008 or 2009) on a holiday with my non golfing wife to Northern Ireland which would take in rounds at RCD and Portrush.
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

I will become a Bandonista in '07, of the winter variety.

Also plan on visiting a few old ladies, such as Olympic (I actually carded 2 rounds on my home course in Novmeber, that must be a record), Spyglass and Pacific Grove, and a few younger lasses such as Barona and Talking Stick.

And my Vizsla has been invited to go to Ballyneal ;)

Where I will play in 2007 will depend on where I get a job, at this point it's looking like Chicago, staying put in Philly, or in the mountains of NC.  If I end up in Chicago then Whistling Straits/Blackwolf will be high on my priority list along with Lawsonia.  At some point next year I would really like to get to The Creek as it's the only big name Raynor/Banks course in the northeast I haven't seen yet.

My brother is finishing his M.D. at UNC-Chapel Hill in May and he's a big fan of Tot Hill Farm (Strantz course... I love it but prefer Tobacco Road), so I'm hoping to engineer a carbon copy of last Fall's Dixie Cup that I was unable to attend (Caledonia, True Blue, and hopefully I can figure out a way to get the two of us onto Bull's Bay).

I also plan to visit a friend in the Simi Valley and play Moorpark Country Club (Jacobson Hardy, 27 holes) and the 2 courses at Lost Canyon (Dye & Couples).

Tom - true story

Noel and I were just at Chicago Golf Club this fall before going up to Erin Hills and Kohler.  During our round we happened to mention you and your "experience" there and it is apparently well known among the membership.  I would suggest that you change your name if you want to go back  ;D

GC:

I too had heard that I'm persona non grata there.  Oh well... just shows the power of the internet.

BTW I exaggerated nothing.  I was truly treated like shit there.  But oh well.... maybe one way to look at my story (though I'm not counting on it) is that some of the members and staff learn that treating guests like crap might not go unnoticed.  And if so, then my gift to golf society is complete.

We all know that between the two of us I am much more likely to be identified as the "troublemaker"  ;) so I can't for the life of me understand your experience.  In two visits I can honestly say that CGC staff, hosts and membership could not have been more gracious, hospitable and generous.

GC - I've heard that as well.  That's why I chalked it up years ago to just a couple people having a bad day... which of course makes me feel bad as likely no current members ever get THAT part of my story.  :'(

I think what I figured out was they really didn't like my "host".. that is the guy who got me on... not a member, but a friend of such... and if you knew that guy it would make all the sense in the world.

I was a dickhead by association, so to speak, and got treated as such.

Only problem is, especially when I'm a guest at a fancy private club like that, I am not a dickhead.  Thus the treatment rather resonated with me.

Mike,

Didn't  you play St. David's with Mike Trenham and Wayne?  I only remember this because I was part of that 4some before that infamous incident of me losing my keys ;)

Mike,

Let's put something together for the early summer and the Penn State courses. By then, some of the green work on the White should be completed along with tree removal.

Fox Hill is wonderful, I'm sure it brings up great memories of home for you.
