Colt's par 3s

For some reason I was thinking about his prowess of these holes and was wondering what people who have played more of his courses than I think are his top par 3s.  Any photos would help.  I've only played one course that was an original Colt design, but I don't know how much is left from that (Detroit CC), unless Milwaukee CC was designed by him, then I've played two.

Harry Colt's best par 3s reside at one course: Swinley Forest

The 4th, 8th, 10th, 13th and 17th are all awesome.  I would look at Ran's profile on Swinley here on the site.  I am sure Portrush has some great ones as well.

I would also nominate the 8th at St. George's Hill (in Doak's book) and the 20th hole at SGH which some think is the best hole on the property. ;D

Noel- You're correct about Royal Portrush having world class par 3's.  

The 6th (Harry's Colt) and the 14th (Calamity) are truely exceptional.  14 is one of the scariest holes I know expecially for someone who's misses tend to be to the right.

The 5th at County Sligo is a most impressive bunkerless par 3.  In fact its certainly the best bunkerless 3 par I know of. The tabletop green / false front is amazing.  A wonderful use of a natural land feature. In many ways I think this hole plays like a Raynor/MacDOnald short hole without needing the surrounding bunkering.

Calamity surely is aptly named and certainly is a great golf hole.  But I wish I could have another crack at it...  I played into into a howling left to right wind, which made it even more terrifying for this "fader" of the golf ball.  So the caddie aims me at a post on the hill to the left, fully 50 yards left of the green... and just to prove the golf gods have a sense of humor, I hit the one draw of my entire Ireland trip, damn near nailing said post on the fly.  The caddie's response:  "nice shot"...

How about the criss-crossing par 3's #5 and #8 at the Eden Course at St. Andrews?  #5 is 144 yards to a wonderful sunken greensite nestled among sandhills of varying size, and #8 is 178 yards to a long plateau green perched between a large sandhill right and falloff left.

#5 might be the 2nd best par 3 at St. Andrews behind #11 Old; I definitely prefer it to #9 New, #8 Old, or anything on the Jubilee.

Here's a few Colt par 3s; played a lot of these but I'm also guessing on a few, from photos:

Royal County Down 4th

Pine Valley 5th (obviously with Crump, not sure about the other 3s there, though Colt did route them).

Broadstone 11th

Brancepeth Castle 9th (one of the world's toughest 3s)

Wentworth West 2nd

St Georges Hill 11th

Muirfield 7th, 13th

Sunningdale New 5th,10th

Hoylake 11th,13th

Eindhoven 3rd

Beaconsfield 7th, 11th (a mini inland version of Calamity with a drop off to an old quarry right of the green)

Tandridge 13th

Brockenhurst Manor 5th,12th

Cuddington 11th (Although this course looks like it might have gone bad since Colt built it).

Prestbury 7th,10th

County Sligo 13th

Denham 12th

With all due respect to Mr. Turner, on St. George's Hill I prefer the 2nd on the third nine and the 3rd on the first nine to the 11th he cites!

It's weird looking at that old list.  It's still good but I'd pick some different ones now.

I think I should have picked the 4th at Sligo over the 13th although it's a super hole too.  I think I was trying to be different!

And Mark is probably right about SGH.  The 14th is also better than the 11th!

Tommy is right about the Eden.  The current opener was once a great par 3 too. And maybe the old 16th was Colt's best NLE par 3, I don't remember it but Tom Doak rated it.

I'd probably drop th 13th at Tandridge.  It's good but the green flattening and the bunker softening...it ain't the same.

Discovered that the 13th at Muirfield is a Simpson redesign too.
