Warm Northeast Weather: Did you play this weekend?
« on: December 17, 2006, 08:13:09 PM »
I know some areas of the country have been getting hammered with cold and/or snow.  But the Northeast has been uncharacteristically warm and has had no snow.
I played Wintonbury Hills in Bloomfield, CT today and it was over 50 degrees.  The course is still in it's normal great (firm) shape and although the greens are a little bumpy from a late season aerification, they weren't bad.  I guess for December 17th in the Northeast, they were perfect.
They've got everyone playing from all the forward tee boxes which probably measured out at about 5500 yards, so the wedges got a workout.  But for December 17th, how can you complain?
Is everyone else in the Northeast still playing?  And other areas north of the Mason-Dixon line?  Just curious.

I played at Myopia with some old work friends last weekend.

It was about 45 and breezy, and anywhere there was shade, there was an inch or two of snow.

It was interesting guessing whether each green had gotten enough sun to thaw out, as those mostly in the shade played like concrete....

And I shot a 71 to boot after not playing for 3 weeks....maybe I shouldn't practice anymore??
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

We have 4 courses that I know of in the Greater Green Bay Frozen Tundra area that are open.  I turned down golf (if you can believe it) on Wed and Fri, because I started a YMCA work out routine.  But, I played yesterday and today and it was swell.  ;D 8)

Love that global warming!

Did you bust your knee when, in a fit of musical euphoria during a concert, you dove off the stage into the mosh pit, only to find that it wasn't a mosh pit, and that your unexpecting fans just moved out of the way in astonishment, leaving a hard wooden floor to break your fall?  I thought so.

I broke my patella when I was 23 years old by diving across a concrete floor to slam a cross court winner in a ping pong game.  The resulting shot made the score 13-0.  It hurt like hell, like a bad funny bone pain, but I recovered in a few minutes and finished the game.

I noticed some changes in my knee afterwards, but I continued to play basketball, jog, and golf for about three years before realizing my knee was getting worse.  I went to the doctor, and the x-ray showed that 20% of my kneecap had split away.  The doctor performed a major surgery to repair the knee, but I lost that part of the kneecap.

I continued to play basketball for several years after, but the injury eventually forced me to give up b-ball and running prematurely, and stick to golf.  Now, at 48, the knee is osteoarthritic and slightly deformed, but doesn't cause me much pain, which I attribute to a consistent effort to keep the joint strong by riding a stationary bike and regular leg extension exercises.

The weather hasn't been conducive to golf in the Pacific Northwest.  23 degrees in North Plains this morning, but the power is back on.

Golfed three times this week and could've done more.

I played 36 this weekend.  Walked 18 each day at my home course outside of Philadelphia and couldn't have been happier.  All I could say all weekend was "I can't believe we're playing in this weather in the middle of December."  I have played winter golf before, but this wasn't winter golf, this felt like fall or spring golf it was incredible.  No frozen greens or anything like that it was just great.

Friday with a good friend and a friend of hers, both from Stonewall.; Saturday with my oldest son and Adam Messix (they teamed up to beat me with my son getting a birdie and 2 pars to put their team in the lead for good); Sunday with Bill Dow and Garry Parkin, his son-in-law.  It is supposed to be 65 degrees today.  Since I started work at 5am this morning, maybe I'll take a break and play some golf before the rain comes in.  I walked and carried all three rounds on our hilly little course.  I am a bit sore, but it has been great to play in such nice December weather.

Unfortunately, I played golf a few times in California during the week and promised my wife I would be home this weekend with the kids so she could shop. If I had known the weather would have been this good in Baltimore in mid-December, I never would have made that deal  ;).
