Photos of Osprey Meadows (ID), GD Best New Upscale Public 2006
« on: December 13, 2006, 11:40:21 AM »
While I'm not around much any more, I figured with the GD
Best New lists coming out recently, I should try to squeeze in
some time to post my pics of Osprey Meadows, the new
course at Tamarack Resort (first new ski resort in U.S. in over
20 years) that opened up this past season.

I played the course while we were on a camping trip on the
other side of the lake (Cascade Res.).  Several folks on the
Best New thread gave their opinions on the course, and, for
the most part, I agree with the majority who were
diappointed in the course (not counting conditioning - I don't
hold that against a new course coming off a tough winter).
There were still some good holes, not to mention split/option
fairways, central bunkering, and tempting r/r holes, though
not all were pulled off well, IMO.

Certainly, the location is beautiful, overlooking the lake, the
mountain/ski runs behind, and mountains in the distance, and
a number of holes capture the views of the lake in the
distance.  A few notes that the course is at 4900 feet
elevation, so the 7300+ tips distance isn't as long as it
sounds.  Also, the place is crawling with high grass/natural
areas teeming with mosquitos.  In the pro shop, they let you
have repellent wipes to wipe on before playing.  You'll notice
the conditioning issues in a several of the pics, with bare
spots and numerous sod patches visible, though the overly
wet conditions not so obvious.

#1, par 5, with blind landing area for the bigger hitters between left bunkers and over right bunkers:

#1, from left side looking at 2nd shot landing area and a pretty good green:

#2, tees shot on long, uphill par 4:

#2, approach to long green w/creek to the side and lodge/clubhouse in distance:

#3, par 3:

#4, long, crescent-shaped par 5 with split fairway.  Fairway
on right (left of lone tall tree and over bunkers )is supposed
to be r/r to go for green in two, but the fairway is so narrow
and sloped, that trying to hit it would take a shot of extreme
precision.  It didn't work.

#4, second shot from right side of main fairway, showing how
hole curves continually around and down to the green by the fish-stocked lake:

#5, par 4 with central bunker in landing area.  Left side is
smaller, but makes approach to green more open (not over greenside bunker):

#5, approach from right of central bunker:

View from 5th hole toward lodge and ski runs.  It's late June,
and there's still snow at the top of the mountain.  (that white
scratch was accidental and I didn't catch it):

#6, long par 3 over wetlands:

#7, uphill par 4:

#7 approach:

#8, par 3 in start of wooded portion of course:

#9, par 5 w/blind, narrow tee shot:

#9, towards landing area on wettest/barest grassed hole on course:

#10, short par 4 around pond to small and partially blocked/blind landing area:

#10 approach with nice view of lake and more snow-capped peaks:

#11, par 4:

#11 approach to tough pin position:

#12, par 5, reachable with big drive over bunker....

and taking the left route around bisecting tree...:

#13, par 3:

#14, long, uphill par 4:

#14 approach (blind without a huge drive):

#15, out of the woods, par 4 downhill dogleg left:

#15 approach from left side to good green:

#16, driveable r/r par 4 with numerous bunkers, though officially a dogleg right:

#17, long par 3:

#18, tee shot at the clunker par 5 (as others stated):

Unless your tee shot is long and left and you're a big hitter,
you likely have to pitch to this tiny island fairway, then have
a long approach to the (wild) green in the distance:

Good day.

Thanks Scott for the photos.  I liked the par 3's and a couple of other holes, but for the most part was very disappointed.  Extrememly surprising that it came in at number 1, particularly since Bandon Trails was on the list, and with the very poor conditioning as well.......

I played it about a months after you and the conditions were no better.

I am also mystified that Bandon Trails did not beat Osprey Meadows.  I would guess the really sloped greens at Bandon Trails, such as 5 and 16, are not universally well liked.

Based upon those photos, I will never travel out of my way to play Osprey Meadows.  Very pretty, but well out of the way.  Ooooo that's harsh.

It doesnt really look all that appealing, especially compared to Bandon Trails.

Based on pictures alone it shocks me it would be on a Top-10 list for anything.
Again I have never played so that is just a opinion based on visuals.

just my opinion...

Scott, Thanks for posting the pictures and I am sorry that I was unavailable when you were out here.  Summers are busy with only a 5 month golf season.

The wetlands on 18 have shrunk alot since your photo, I played the course a couple of times in mid-late Sept and it was much less severe.

My biggest beef with the course is that it is arguably the most unfriendy walking course that I have ever played.  Just to navigate around all the wetlands would add over a mile of walking, not to mention the travel from green to tee.  Even # 4 green is over 80 yards from the parking area.

Conditioning aside, what this course lacks is comical when compared with Bandon Trails, even if one is not in love with BT.

I think this really begs the question.  "HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO WIN A BEST NEW COURSE AWARD?"

What are the disappointing aspects of the course? So far we have conditioning, and a split fairway that doesn't work. What are the greens like? Is the bunkering a hazard, or just decoration?

Ed,

Greens were ok but not memorable.. Too many blind tee shots to start the round off with (the first three non-par 3's are pretty blind of the tee).  18 is a disaster.  Bunkering was ok, somewhat penal, but not spectacular.Just not that many really good holes.  Just kind of a blah course.  It's not terrible, but I didn't think it was much fun.

I would be interested in finding out how many raters played it..

I second Sean's comment that the greens we uninspired.  I think the greens were flattish, somewhat on the large side, in order to compensate for the severity of the rest of the course.  A mid to high handicapper is going to need to buy balls from the cart gal at some point in the back nine.

I really feel that this was a bit of a lost opportunity.  Some of the holes felt like they could have played better in reverse.  With 400+ acres and A LOT OF MONEY the golf really could have catered to the resort golfer more.  The reaction from area golfers was mostly that It really beat them up, sometimes just for the hell of it.

Two above said they wouldn't go out of their way to play
here due to the pictures/course not being inviting.  Keep in
mind I had a gloomy day (rained as soon as I
finished)....without sun, pics aren't as good.  Also, I'm not a
photographer, by any means....I take pics as fast as possible
so as to not be slowed down (even when I'm alone).  I keep
my camera on the 'worst' picture setting to free up memory
for hundreds of pics taken while on trips.   Also, when I shrink
the photos for posting, they lose resolution.

Here are professional pics taken of Osprey Meadows:

The wetlands play as ESA and the locale rule gives you a free drop.  I enjoyed the photos not touched up with photoshop, you get a better sense of the place.  I still think the raters where looking for any reason not to give it to Bandon Trails.  While BT is a good course, it dosen't hold up well when compared to PD or BD.  Which as we all know any rater who played BT played the other two on the same trip.  Its an award the resort and Mr. Coore and Mr. Crenshaw won't lose any sleep over.

I would never recognize the course based on the touched up photos.  Scott's pictures are much more accurate....Looks like the raters may have never made it there and just rated it based on these pictures... ;)

I think BT holds up very well with its siblings...

What's the deal with the tee-marker flags?  That might be the ugliest way I have ever seen to differentiate between multiple sets of tees.

not to rehash this discussion but on a five day trip, playing once a day, how many rounds at BT?  I'd play Pac 5 times, but thats me.

Joe,

I have played the other 2 quite a bit so I would play BT twice with PD 2 times as well.

Talk about your all-time hijacks...

The answer to your question of course, Joe, is that on a 5 day trip, nobody plays just one round a day.

Just what I was thinking Ryan. Who on earth goes to Bandon of all places and just plays once a day. If it is daylight you golf at Bandon.

Joe,
   PD 3, BT 1 or 2, BD 1 or 0.

Best Golf Digest upscale public, they must be kidding us.

First, the course looks booooorrrrring, Second, it's in Idaho, how could they get enuf raters to Idaho to get the required votes.

Something must be amiss, Sherlock ???
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Scott, I don't understand why you think #4's split fairway doesn't work.  Obviously the fairway on the right (short cut) needs to be more difficult to hit otherwise where is the risk in "risk/reward"?  The hole is over 600 yards from the tips, at least it gives you an option to get there in two.  I actually found it to work quite well.  From the tips I hit my Driver to the fairway on the right and then hit a Hybrid into the bunker left of the green.  How many 600+ yard holes do you have the possibility of going Driver-Hybrid and reaching the green?  If you can reach any 600+ yard hole in two shots it better have a pretty good precision shot or risk somewhere.  In the end, the right fairway is an 'option' shot, not a required one.

Golf Digest requires a minimum of 10 raters getting to the course in order to consider it as a candidate to win any awards.  When I went in July there had been 11 there.  I'm not sure how many more made it in August.  A rater from Canada was actually there the day I played it.

Well, I can't say much since I didn't see or play it. Going just by the photos, I get the impression this RTJjr course closely mimics the look and hole presentations of Jones jr.'s University Ridge in Madison WI.

I was curious on the scorecard to see that 6-12 handi's are recommended to play it at ~6700+ yards, and 13-20s at ~5900.  Isn't that a wee short for the 13-20 set at that altitude?  Also, isn't that quite a disparity of yardage for those mid to higher handicaps from the better players?

It seems there are way too many forced layups to odd locations that must then cross wetlands that appear too long for the higher handicaps, from what we can see in photos.  It doesn't look like it would be an enjoyable round for the high handi, if they are loosing many balls in ESAs.  IMHO.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.
