Tony, I'm not a rater, so I have at least 150 courses in my top 12.  Mark.

Woodhall Spa is simply one of the great golfing days out. IMO one of the finest set of bunkers in golf.

Woodhall is indeed one of the great golf days out and, if you are a member of a club affiliated to the English Golf Union, one of the great golf bargains as well.
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

I have never seen a bunker quite like that. Woodhall Spa is one of the top places on my "to play" list.  Any more pictures?

Having played almost every well know course in the British Isles, I just don't get Woodhall Spa. While not a bad course, it has none of the topography or interest of the other well known courses. I would not rate it in the top 50. What am I missing?

Noel aka NAF, I played there in June and loved it. The holes are so strong. there is no let up on the course and the traps with beat you up. Great course.

Fred, FWIW I tend to agree with you. The bunkers at Woodhall Spa are fantastic. The rest of the course was nice but hardly upper-echelon, to my mind. If I had to guess, I would suggest that a majority of posters here are much more into bunker design more than the average golfer - they'd see and savour the majesty of the third photo and be willing to overook the relative blandness of the first photo. But better to hear from defenders of the course as to why they like it than listen to me, even if I would note that the review of WS on this site focuses on it being a "Battle of the Bunkers" between WS and Ganton... ;)

Cheers,
Darren

I've never played Woodhall Spa, but to my eye, the first picture looks anything but bland (relative or absolute).

Darren, in all due respect. I think it is a wonderful course with a bit of greatness at every turn. It is a big course which makes every shot important. I do think the traping, routing along with some pretty good green complexes make a great course on otherwise average flat land.
