England from the air -3

Surrey this time.  Lots of GCA favourites.  Occasionally the postcode leads you slightly astray if using Google Earth, in which case I've given bearings which you can simply copy and paste.  Some quite interesting web sites, too.  As there are so many clubs I'll post in manageable chunks.

Surrey

Abbey Moor (1991 - D Walker) 9-hole pay-and-play
KT15 2XU

Addington (The) (1913 – Abercromby)  Classic GCA favourite
http://www.addingtongolf.com/
CR0 5AB

Addington Court (1931 - Fred Hawtree) Two 18-hole courses and a 9-hole course, pay and play.
CR0 9AA

Addington Palace (1930 - Hawtree and Taylor) Parkland despite being so close to the Addington.
http://www.addingtonpalacegolf.co.uk/default.aspx
CR0 5BB

Banstead Downs (1890 – Braid) Free-draining chalky downland.  Looks as if there could have been further holes to the east.  Yet further to the east is that a prison?
http://www.bansteaddowns.com/bd/
SM2 7DD

Barrow Hills (1970) Mini course sss 53
HT16 0DS

Betchworth Park (1911 Colt)  Parkland course with informative club/course history on the website, plus some vintage pictures.
http://www.betchworthparkgc.co.uk/homenew2.htm
RH4 1NZ

Bletchingley (1993) Proprietary club.  Architect?
http://www.bletchingleygolf.co.uk/
RH1 4LP

Bowenhurst Golf Centre 9 holes par 62 (not in high resolution)
GU10 5RP

Bramley (1913 Mayo/Braid)  Pretty, rolling parkland course in Surrey countryside
http://www.bramleygolfclub.co.uk/
GU5 0AL

Broadwater Park 9 hole par 3 course, not built when Google Earth image was taken
GU7 3BU

Burhill (1907 Park, new course Simon Gidman)  A remarkable Google Earth image with an airliner in silhouette over the clubhouse plus its ghost!  Barnes Wallis designed the bouncing bomb in the Burhill clubhouse.  Two courses, one old, one new.
www.burhillgolf-club.co.uk
KT12 4BL

Camberley Heath (1913 Colt)  The most expensive course in Britain at the time of its construction.  Nowadays rather spoiled by the proximity of housing and busy roads – there are two tunnels – and an awful pond put in recently on the 16th.
http://www.camberleyheathgolfclub.co.uk/
GU15 1JG

Central London Golf Centre (1992 – Patrick Tallack)  Brilliant use of a tiny strip of land so close to the centre of London.  Very good value green fees considering its location.
http://www.clgc.co.uk
SW17 0AT

Chessington Golf Centre (1983 – Patrick Tallack)  9-hole short course plus teaching facilities
http://www.chessingtongolf.co.uk/
KT9 2LW

Chiddingfold (1994)  Good value public access course in a nice part of Surrey
http://www.chiddingfoldgc.co.uk/
GU8 4SL

Chipstead (1906)  A shortish course in the North Downs.  Designer?
www.chipsteadgolf.co.uk
CR5 3LN

Chobham (1994 – Alliss/Clark)  Colin Montgomerie was the touring pro here in former times.
http://www.chobhamgolfclub.co.uk/
GU21 2TZ

Clandon Regis (1994 – David Williams) Welshman David Williams is quite active in the south-east.  He was lucky to get a site such as this so close to Guildford.
www.clandonregis-golfclub.co.uk
GU4 7TT

Coombe Hill (1911 – Abercromby)  It is said that Abercromby went up in a balloon to route this course.  There are some excellent short holes and a good number of demanding longer par 4s.  Many greens are located on high ground, meaning that there is a lot of hill-climbing to be done.  The short par-4 14th was especially prised by Bobby Jones.

Surrey part 2

Coombe Wood (1904 – Williamson) At 5299 yards from the very tips this is one of the shortest 18 hole courses in the country.  But it is great fun – I used to play there a lot with the Concert Golfing Society.  A very friendly membership and welcoming staff.
http://www.coombewoodgolf.com/
KT2 7NS

Coulsdon Court (1937 - Colt)  Exceptionally good value green fees for a Colt course with fine views of the Downs.
http://www.coulsdoncourt.co.uk/
CR5 2LL

Cranfield Golf (1970 – John Jacobs) A 9-hole course and driving range within Sandown Park race course.  Not in high resolution on Google Earth.
http://www.sandown.co.uk/
KT10 8AN

Cranleigh (1985)  Quite a short (5648 yards) 18-hole course, the best feature being the 400 year-old clubhouse.
http://www.cranleighgolfandleisure.co.uk/
GU6 7NG

Croham Hurst (1911 – Braid/Hawtree) Well-known old club near Croydon.  Web site currently under development.
www.chgc.co.uk
CR2 7HJ

Cuddington (1929 – Colt)  Rambling Colt course next door to Banstead Downs, with several road crossings and plentiful adjacent housing.  I played it once and lost heavily in a match, so I do not remember it with the affection perhaps I should!
http://www.cuddingtongc.co.uk/
SM7 1RD

Dorking (1897 – Braid) Well-reputed 9-hole course, short but very attractive.
http://www.dorkinggolfclub.co.uk/
RH5 4BX

Drift (1976 – Sir Henry Cotton/Bob Sandow) Tree-lined fairways and lots of rhododendrons.
http://www.driftgolfclub.com/
KT24 5HD

Dulwich and Sydenham Hill (1894 - Colt) I am sorry to see that they have introduced water hazards.  It used to be charming place to play, with superb views over London.  Quite hilly.
http://www.dulwichgolf.co.uk/
SE21 7LH

Dunsfold Aerodrome (1965)  Once a significant Second World War base and later a Hawker test flight centre, now a private airfield.  The golf course seems to be rather basic.  The postcode must be for the secretary’s orivate house – quite some miles away.  The web site doesn’t mention golf, but it will interest aviation buffs.
http://www.dunsfoldaerodrome.com/home.asp?fdv=1
51° 6'48.26"N  0°31'59.94"W

Effingham (1927 – Colt)  Delightful and very rural course on historic land with a distinguished clubhouse.  There is a farm in the middle of the course!
http://www.effinghamgolfclub.com/
KT24 5PZ

Epsom (1889 – The Masters of Epsom College)  Quirky little downland course renowned for its mischievous greens.  It only has sand bunkers on one hole, the last.  The postcode is correct – track south-west on Google Earth and some of the course will be revealed.
http://www.epsomgolfclub.co.uk/
KT17 4JR

Farleigh Court (1997 – John Jacobs) 27-hole proprietary set-up close to Croydon.
CR6 9PX

Farnham (1896)  I don’t know who designed it, but I used to enjoy playing there.  The routing is unusual, taking in a number of differing tracts of land, including some heathland.  It’s built on sand and gives excellent winter golf.
http://www.dotsquares.com/fgc/
GU10 1PX

Farnham Park Par Three (1966)  Quite a good short course which tackles the wind in every direction.
GU9 0AU

Foxhills (1975 Hawtree)  A vast resort business with two full-length 18-hole courses and a 9-hole course, plus all the trappings necessary for weddings and conferences.  If you like tree-lined courses, it is handsome.
http://www.foxhills.co.uk/
KT16 0EL

Gatton Manor (1969 – John D Harris)  Another resort course, with the obligatory fountains resembling whales blowing water.  What place have these in the English countryside?
http://www.gattonmanor.co.uk/
RH5 5PQ

Goal Farm Par Three   Useful little course further west along the railwat from West Hill.
http://www.gfgc.co.uk/
GU24 0PZ

Guildford (1886 – Taylor/Hawtree)  Handsome downland/parkland course.  I used much to enjoy playing here back in the early 70s.
http://www.guildfordgolfclub.co.uk/
GU1 2HL

Hampton Court Palace (1895 – Park)  Formerly known as Home Park, until the members lost control of the lease.  How much Park remains I cannot say, but it is quite a privileged spot in which to play golf.  Critics of it are sent to The Tower. The post code doesn’t quite find the course, hence the co-ordinates.
http://www.crown-golf.co.uk/templates/clubs_golfclub____65.aspx
51°23'40.66"N  0°19'13.51"W

Hankley Common (1896  - Braid/Colt)  A gorgeous heathland course with few trees and abundant heather.  Some fine views from the higher ground.  The 11th is a great par 3, and the 18th is a wonderful finisher.
http://www.hankley.co.uk/
51°10'28.93"N  0°44'45.65"W

Hazelwood Golf Centre (1992 – Jonathan Gaunt)  A useful addition to the pay-and-play facilities relatively close to the centre of London.  A 9-hole course with a single par 5.
TW16 6QU

Hersham Village  Not in high resolution.  A short (5,500 yard) course at Walton-on-Thames with inexpensive green fees.
KT12 4RA

Hindhead (1904 – Braid/Taylor)  Very characterful heathland course near the Devil’s Beeftub.  The ground is quite undulating and the back nine is something special – that is, if you find a level stance!
http://www.the-hindhead-golf-club.co.uk/
GU26 6HX

Hoebridge Golf Centre (1982 – Jacobs/Hawtree) A useful public complex of a full-length 19-hole course, mid-length 9-hole course and an 18-hole par-3 course not far from Woking, The Wisley and Pyrford.
http://www.hoebridgegc.co.uk/
GU22 8JH

Horne Park (1995)  Inexpensive 9-hole course on the site of a Second World War aerodrome, now peaceful in the Surrey countryside.
http://www.hornepark.co.uk/
RH9 8JP

Horton Park (1987)  A full-length 18-hole and par-30 9-hole course with very a reasonable rate for pay-and-play.
51°21'22.92"N   0°16'29.29"W

Hurtmore (1992 – Alliss/Clark)  Quite short (5530 yards) course alongside the A3 with a few water hazards.  Excellent value for money.

Part 3

Kingswood (1928 – Braid)  Lengthy for a Braid course (over 6,900 yards) and the £40 green fee is remarkably good value for a club with a big membership (770) so close to London.
http://www.kingswood-golf.co.uk/
KT20 6NE

Laleham (1903)  The web site informs that Bing Crosby and Bob Hope are among those who have played here, but it does not say who designed the course.  It is an unknown quantity to me.
http://www.laleham-golf.co.uk/
51°24'22.83"N   0°29'43.87"W

Leatherhead (1903)  Again, I know nothing of the course design.  The web site  suggests a number of pretty holes.
http://www.lgc-golf.co.uk/
KT22 0EE

Limpsfield Chart (1889)  An old club with a 9-hole layout, said to be heathland.

http://www.merristwood-golfclub.co.uk/

Milford (Alliss/Clark)  A recent course with the obligatory water hazards.
http://www.crown-golf.co.uk/templates/clubs_golfclub____167.aspx
GU8 5HS

Mitcham (1891 – Tom Morris) This was the original Prince’s Golf Club, an exclusive club with links to Parliament.  When Prince’s relocated to Sandwich in 1924, this became a public access course and it still is, with weekday green fees of only £15!  I played here a few times in the 70s – quite flat, with plenty of space, but many a ball-swallowing thicket.

Richmond (The) (1891 – Tom Dunn) You simply have to visit the website to read the history of the place and see the pictures of the remarkable clubhouse.  I played here a few years ago and found the course itself rather cramped.

KT18 7EW

Royal Mid-Surrey (1892 – JH Taylor) Famous for its early humps and mounds, but its plentiful bunkers are more likely to collect the ball during the round.  It is very flat, yet some of the greens are cunningly built up.  The shorter Inner Course is great fun.

Alfie - unfortunately not much of Scotland is yet in high resolution on Google Earth - not even St Andrews, and there is total cloud cover over Cruden Bay and that part of the north-east coast. However, suitably chastened, I shall put a Scottish page together next.  Mark.

You gotta love a country that has a village, much less a golf course, called "Dorking." :)

Rich, Dorking reminds me of an episode of 'The Glums' many years ago:

Ron: 'Eff, where should we go for our holidays?'
Eff: 'Beloved, shall we try Shanklin?'
Ron: 'I don't think I've ever shankled, Eff.'
