Jim -

To be clear, I think rough and trees are both bad ideas, but but if you are committed to travel down that road, trees are worse than rough. For the reasons given above.

I simply don't buy the idea that trees are a less permanent feature than rough.

I also don't understand how the following are not opposites:

Club A wants more trees.  Club B wants fewer trees.

Whatever the frequency with which Club A and Club B hold major tournaments, those are opposite views on the tree issue. If they aren't, I want a full refund on the sentential logic course I took in college. ;)

Bob,

With all due respect, that logic doesn't answer the question. In fact it has no bearing on this thread. What's behind that logic, supporting it, is the key and clearly you know the answer to that.

Having, and wishing, just one chance to build my own course....
Make it as good as I can.
Maintain it tip-top all year every year.
Play it as often as I can.
Sit looking it as often as I can.
Think about it everyday and seek ways to enhance it in every aspect.
Build-in lots of shots I like and, hopefully, other will enjoy.
Make it tough as blazes off the tips (for that championship you talk of) because aggressors like a challenge.
Make everyone welcome to come and play subject to not getting crowded.  That is the Irish way and it would be no fun being home alone.
Hope like hell most people who visit will feel that the wee bit of their life spent here was worth spending in this way.
