Surreal Sites for golf?
« on: November 17, 2006, 01:08:30 PM »
Is it possible to build a golf course in a jungle?

To build a course on highlands with tee boxes and fairway tumbling through ancient ruins?

That would be cool.

Old Head is the most surreal site I've ever seen. Say what you will about the golf course, but the place is absolutely jawdropping. I think it is a must play because of it..

Jordan, you've been playing way too much EA Sports / Tiger Woods golf.  ;D

I agree with Sean, btw.

Sounds like someone's seen the old Devil's Island course on the first PC Links version....

As for the jungle idea, there are a couple of Hawaiian courses that do just that, Luana Hills and Koolau, and part of Princeville as well.  I'm sure there are some others in SE Asia that do the same, probably even wilder and woolly-er...
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

La Paz CC in Bolivia looks to be (from the one photo I've seen) pretty surreal.  I remember seeing pictures of a place called Genting Highlands in Malaysia in a book of Brian Morgan photos.  It appeared to be entirely hewn from jungle.  If NASA is to bebelieved (and the conspiracy theories are well supported by my wife, daughter and one of my sons) didn't a fellow called Alan Shepard (spelling?) once play golf somewhere far, far away?

Jordan - there are quite a few courses in Hawaii that have one or more jungle holes...

But, I'd say Pebble, Cypress, MPCC oceanfront holes and the first five at Spyglass are in a pretty surreal setting...

Also there is a hole at Mangilao in Guam which plays over the ocean that looks pretty unreal.

Luana Hills on Oahu is DEFINITELY in the jungle/rainforest...the back nine, that is.

There is about a half-mile cart drive from 10 green to 11 tee that goes through the forest with no sky exposure.

Note, this photo is also from the Luana Hills site-

(Somehow cant get those site pics to link properly)

Stonehaven in Scotland, near Aberdeen, is pretty surreal. Set on a slanted piece of land hugging the cliffs of the northeastern Scottish coast, it has several thrilling par 3s skirting the cliffs, some terrific carries over huge ravines, a pastoral meadow containing four holes that doesn't even seem to be part of the same course, a commuter rail line whizzing through the course every few minutes, an 18th hole that ends near a graveyard, and a bunker courtesy of Hitler -- all on 60-some compact acres.

I'm adding this to my travel plans for next year. Thanks for the website

Cary
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I think our own Doak has had a shot at some pretty surreal sites.

I mean more surreal than anything ever built.

The middle of a jungle, or way in ancient ruins.

Could it be possible?

I guess you have to think big to do big, so Im thinkin at my best...

You want surreal? You want jungle?  The Subic Bay Golf Club in the Phillipines was routed through some of the densest jungle in the world, just outside the Naval Base there.  The second hole was a 90 degree dogleg par 4 around a huge tree that was filled with monkeys.  These monkeys were loud, highly critical of your swing, and were not above jumping down to snag your Spalding Dot and screech at you while doing see.

Check out the rough behind this green which was obviously remodeled since my last round in 1966:

Jordan, you need to get in touch with Forrest.  He has a line on a place called Mugonkey Hills on Foule Pointe he is dying to tell you about.   ;) ;D  Perhaps do a site search, if I have the name spelled right.  It is truly a mystical and magical place.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I have played a few courses in the Far East that have "monkey holes" .

The novelty wore off quick .

Although the first time I ever saw a ProV1 was when a monkey threw one at me , at Bangphra GC in Thailand .

Best Regards.
Brian

Did you look at this web site Ryan posted?

Not sure how much more "in the middle of a jungle" you could get.
