Today's easy quote
« on: November 03, 2006, 11:50:50 AM »
A hole should always give one the impression that it owes its existence to its own intrinsic merits, to its individuality and character, and not, as too often happens, to the fact that it had to be there because, forsooth, there was no other place to put it.

Who wrote that?

Late 19th century - it's a golf writer/commentator, not, so far as I am aware, an architect.

True Mark. In fact I was starting to wonder if  Shylock had ever tinkered with GCA. But it was penned many years ago. I won't give the game away because I cheated and searched the quote. Turns out golfclubatlas has it listed somewhere in a course report on a famous links of the Emerald Isles.

Tom S III, Well done!

I take it Smith only wrote - was he involved in design work at all?
