Saturday's quotes 1
« on: November 04, 2006, 06:03:55 AM »
My favourite golf course in Japan. ----- is where we designed a dramatic style of bunkering for the first time in this country.  The traps have hard faces so the ball never becomes buried in them.  The bunkers have a formal appearance similar to elements found in a Japanese garden.  The bunkers are yellowish-brown in colour, turning a darker, more dramamtic colour when it rains.  ----- Country Club is probably one of the five best-bunkered golf courses in the world. The course also has some dramatic elevation changes, while its beautiful trees create the feel of a paradise here.

Which architect wrote this?  Can you name the course?

Multiple choice.  Is it:

a)  Charles Alison
b)  Desmond Muirhead, or
c)  Mike Hurdzan?

Mark -

I don't know where you found a quote from Alison -- but if it's not Alison, then whoever said this needs a refresher course in the history of golf architecture in Japan.

It's not Alison - someone much more recent and not afraid to blow his own trumpet.

Who else could describe one of his own courses as one of the five best-bunkered golf courses in the world?

Unfortunately, there are too many correct answers to that question.

Player.

Manna.

I have the book. What a load of drivel it is too. I would offer it up as a prize for one of my daft competitions on here, but I don't want any fellow GCAer to have to suffer as I have.

Martin,  You will see that I was slightly involved in that book.  Originally GP chose 40 of his own courses for inclusion!  His hack ZA journalists provided awful copy, full of mistakes, including mixing up Robert Trent Jones and Robert Tyre Jones.  I got in something of a roast for having managed to get so many of GP's courses expunged.  But he owns the company that publishes the books and he had the upper hand - I didn't work for them again and a solo book of mine I'd done for them was taken off the market.
