Favorite Long Island Moments......(In pictures)
« on: October 23, 2006, 05:31:40 AM »
Was going through some of my pics and found a couple I'm not sure I posted before, so if anyone has some images they want to post that they've taken while visiting on Long Island......

Westhampton's Redan (from the back)

Shinnecock's infamous Redan, up close and personal

Tommy:

I've often thought Westhamptons Redan was among the best, if not the best, Redan I've played.  I find the smaller scale more exciting than, say, Yales or Piping Rocks.

Can you post more pics of WH's Redan?

Guys, I do have more images, I just have to find them on disk and will do so later today--hopefully!

Jerry, How long did we try to put around on Hidden Creek's Redan before the group behind us halted our activity?

Tommy: If I remember correctly we did that on quite a few holes - I don't remember which hole it was but there was a short par 4 with a buried elephant in the middle of it that kept you and George giggling like little kids for what seemed like hours - that had to be one of my greatest learning experiences I have had on a golf course.

Tommy;
Great photos!
How did you create them (just crop digital photos down to a panoramic view)?

Jerry, That was in fact #8, and I think I was so enamored I didn't get a shot of the green!

Chip, Thanks for noticing, the photos are three-shots each pieced-together. The Shinnecock one was tricky!

Tommy;
Great job then - that's some damn fine stitching in Photoshop. Perhaps you should be working for the AP? :)

Chip,
I agree with you, I am an APe!

Actually, the softwear is amazing stuff. (Photoshop) Although I'm finding in some cases putting them together, stretching and skewing yourself is also pretty good. The Shinnecock image was done this way while the Westhampton image was in fact stitched with pieces filled in on both.

To me, Westhampton's redan is pretty unique for a redan in how it can be played. Basically there are three distinct options---eg to kind of bank a shot off the right side, to hit a ball right at the virtual swale created by the middle or even take it semi-left to right off the left side which is really unusual for a right to left redan. The length of the green and it's mild angle or orientation to the tees allow this unique play for a redan hole. I've never seen another one play quite like that one.

To me, that's the interest of something like redan holes---eg they are not supposed to be exact copies as too many think---they are supposed to have their own little wrinkles in both look and play. Westhamption's is pretty unique and it's a very good one.

There're a good number of really unique greens on that Westhampton golf course which is interesting to consider since apparently Westhampton was Raynor's first course on his own.

Great photos Tommy! You can really see the subtleties in the greens.
