The Foulis Brothers....Ross on Steroids..
« on: October 24, 2006, 03:06:36 PM »
I played Glen Echo this weekend in a match play event and found the course to be possibly the most interesting example of difficult classic architecture I have ever seen.  It made me think this is what Ross would have built if he wasn't such a marketing machine.  What are other examples of their work. (I played Forrest Park before it was destroyed by Hale)  Below is an excelent piece on their work which leads me to believe they may be the lost heroes of american architecture:

John-
Was that your first round there?  GE is one of my favorites in St. Louis and I've often thought it was hidden gem material. Good opener, some quirky holes, 2 good long par 4's, slopy(sp?) greens, etc. Did you pick up on one oddity of the architecture?

Jim Healey  did a 'my home course' of it:

Normandie is a Foulis  public cousin of Glen Echo, maybe a 3 mile drive but you could hit driver, 3 wood across a county park from 1 green at GE to #17 at Normandie. They have very similar terrain as you might expect but Normandie's a bit rougher around the edges. You might want to play it in a hurry - it would be a good pre-game 5 outing.

Buck,

I think Glen Echo is the most interesting architecture in town.  The Foulis brothers were just too good for this game to ever have become popular.  I honestly think that guys like CB and Ross toned it down for the beginning and soon to be lifetime hack that perpetuated the growth of the game.

It was the first time I have ever played Glen Echo and it was in the Glenwood cup.  A Ryder cup match format between GE and Norwood Hills.  To give you an idea of the home court advantage..They beat us by 6 points at their club and we rallied to beat them by 12 at ours...First time Norwood had won in a couple of years...bout time I won something.
