Is Ardglass the Best Kept Secret in Ireland
« on: October 16, 2006, 04:48:03 PM »
Played Ardglass on Friday.  Located just a short distance from Royal County Down.  Spectacular golf course, challenging holes especially with the wind.  Fortunately there was no rain.  The course played firm and fast, amazing vistas and views of the Irish Sea, the Town, the Lighthouse at ST. John's Point.
Challenging but not overly penal like the European Club which is also spectacular.  A very fun course to play.
Anyone else ever played there?

 Dave,

I played there (Ardglass)twice. They have made some changes since I was there last.

The use of the rugged coastline on #2 starts the fun. The green just beyond the diagonal wall  gave me an idea of what to expect from the more famous one at N.Berwick.

   I can't imagine a "muni" much better.

I remember the caddies at RCD suggesting that it was a waste of time!

Dave (or anyone) I have been told by a bar room sage that you can join Ardglass as an overseas member very reasonably, and if you time your visits you can enjoy reciprocal rights over RCD.  Did you ever hear of such wondrous tales?

Ardglass isn't in the same class as its famous neighbors, but if Ardglass was my home course, I would be very happy. I would include it on a Northern Ireland itinerary -- great views, fun golf, quaint location, and a place that doesn't see busloads of golf tourists.

Ardglass is a Private Club and the caddies from RCD came with us to caddie.

Is there any background on the clubhouse? I think I like it. It is unique.

I believe it is the Ardglass Castle. In their literature they describe it as the oldest Club House in the world built in the twelth century.
I have the info at home.  I'll check it and let you know more.

 Dave,

I put"muni" in quotes because it is a less ambitious course  that often is a  muni over here. I'm glad some of the caddies like it.

Wow! It must have improved dramatically since 1999. I recall dingy bathrooms and a dumpy little place to get a sandwich. I am glad to hear it is better now.

Having never played Ardglass, I cannot say whether it is "The Best Kept Secret in Ireland." I have played Narin & Portnoo in the NW of Ireland and certainly would submit it as a contender for that title.

I don't know, but I wonder if Ardglass was stung into improving things when it found that Kilkeel was the joint host of the 1999 Amateur Championship with RCD.  Sorry, I can't find a website for Kilkeel - but there is a single picture here http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/shortbreaks/product.aspx?ProductID=1693

Gents,

We just played Ardglass and were bowled over by the opening holes. As they said on the first " keep it right cause all of Ireland is to the west of you". However we found it to be more complicated after that. What did you think of the flatter holes after the coast( 7,8,9 & 14, 15)?

They apparrently redesigned some holes recently and abandoned some very good golf terrain adjacent to number 4 in the interior part of the course. We asked who the archie was and they said it was some local professional( not very clear). We also noticed the two seaside backside par threes , altho good, were virtually identical in character.

Seems a shame that , if true, an architect with more talent and experience wasn't involved. Overall a pleasant little stop on the golf trail.

ward,

You stole my thunder. If one looks at that picture above of #8 you are looking at four holes , I think that's the number. They go up and down the hill for a rather boring set of tee shots. But, I thought the green complexes were quite different in their challenges. One had a creek to cross ; another had a wall; still another some interesting mounds.

This part of the course is  less ambitious. But it still has variety.

I also find my evaluation of courses is affected by the cost/value equation. Ardglass is considerably cheaper than RCD, but in my mind NOT considerably less of a golfing experience.

Is that you Tony?

AG is cheaper that RCD but more significantly much more accessible. I would still much rather pay to play RCD than AG (not on a daily basis) altho it beat my brains out.

BTW they have remodeled the club bar/dining area of the AG clubhouse and it is rather nice now.

Got the opportunity to play Ardglass in 1995 with my father and brothers (7 of us went over) at the suggestion of Jim Finegan.  Even met a fine Irish Lass who played with us at Ardglass and at RCD the next day.

Loved the opening holes, and the look of the club house.  Agree that the inside was nothing special back then.

Ward/Mayday

I agree the flat holes didn't do alot for me but the start of the golf course was all I could think about.  Watching all the fishing boats coming back in from their day on the Irish Sea and having to hit shots over the vistas into #2.  Do not recall the course being tough to score on.

I have been to Ireland twice '95 & '97 (southwest), but whenever anyone asks if I have been there I always find myself talking to people about Ardglass even though I played RCD, Portrush, Royal Dublin, Baltray, Portmarnock and Island Club.

Actually find myself talking alot about Dooks from the '97 trip, may be the hardest 6000 course over there.

I understand the three new holes along the water (nine thorugh eleven) were designed by former Northern Ireland professional David Jones, also responsible for updates to the Killeen course in Killarney (his first designing job), and for designing the course at the Hilton Templepatrick complex near Belfast.

The losses inlcude two charming, if old-fashioned holes.  “The Wall” was a par 5 that required a second shot over an ancient six-foot stone fence, while “The Downs” was a quirky par 3 perched up high in the winds that had been around for a century (the old seventheenth).

Cribbing from the club history by George Rice, Ardglass Golf Club was founded during the British golf boom of the 1890s by a group of local Protestant luminaries who leased land around the Ardglass Estate.  The impressive manor on the site had been built in the 1790s on the site of  a fortified medieval trading station,  and considerable portions of the fourteenth century structure were retained as an attachment to the new residence.  The most important and fascinating resident was William Ogilvie, a former tutor who married his employer, the Duchess of Leinster, after her husband died.  A good thing for Ardglass, for when he moved to the town in 1806 at the age of 66 he set about transforming the sleepy backwater, building hot sea baths and hotels to attract visitors, digging out the town harbour, and donating land and money to both Protestant and Catholic churches.

The estate had fallen on hard times by the time Ogilvie’s great-grandson, Aubrey De Vere Beauclerk (himself a descendent of Charles II’s mistress Nell Gwynn) agreed to lease the property to the fledgling golf club. The members laid out the first seven holes in April, 1896, bought the property and manor outright in 1927,  and finally extended the course to eighteen holes in 1970.

This thread is further evidence of the value of gca.com. I learned that my six year information is way out of date. They made some interesting changes there. I'm disappointed at the demise of the wall hole. The white painted circle that indicated the green's location was special quirk.

I have my Ardglass wind shirt on today and it prompted me to do a search for what people in here think about it.

Ardglass was our 10th round in 6 days and damned if we didn't get rained out on the 6th hole (actually it was lightning, just rain we'd have kept on)...we were very disappointed not to be able to see the rest of the course - what we did see we thought was fantastic and we really enjoyed it.

We found the people to be absolutely charming.  When we arrived (afternoon) the pro shop was closed and the clubhouse locked.  A member arrived and we followed her in and found our way to the bar and the bartender looked out the window and said "the course looks wide open, I'd go on out an play if I were you and worry about the rest later", so we did.  Ultimately the pro credited our green fees toward our clothing purchases in the proshop, which we thought was a classy thing to do.

I look forward to going back...
