The Grove

I don't know if The Grove has already been discussed here.

I watched some of the tournament yesterday and though the golf was boring, The Grove looked interesting.

Has anyone played it?

BTW, based on some of his off-hand comments, it sounds like IBF knows a little about gca. He was actually able to give attributions to Colt for several courses near The Grove in southern England. In fact IBF seemed to more know more about the courses than Faldo who both grew up playing those courses as a junior golfer and now claims to be an architect dedicated to work within the traditions of the Golden Age.

IBF is a budding architect himself with a couple of projects under his belt.

The  Grove should be selected by the Euros to host a future Ryder Cup. ;D

I was there on Saturday being entertained for the day, so I have access all area passes and I have indeed played the golf course before.

Just a fantastic golf course with quite simply the finest set of green formations ive experienced with the most interest without detracting from the surrounding landscape too much..

Philip Chiverton the head greenkeeper presented that golf course, the best i have ever personally seen both on tv and in person.. it was immaculate but good immaculate not overdone!

...the players raved about it!  Greens were perfection 10.5 on the stimp on the flat

James, I have a reliable inside source who tells me the greens were rolling 11'6"-12' for the tournament. But I wasn't there myself.

I saw an interview on TV with T.Woods. He called the greens at the Grove "perfect". I heard him use that word to describe greens once before, at Mount Juliet about 2-3 years ago. In both cases, the greens were pure A-4.

I conclude that Tiger likes putting on well-managed A-4.

What liked about The Grove was the movement in the fairways, the width of the fairways and green surrounds that presented some very interesting recovery choices. Good stuff.

But the look of the course was odd. There was a mixture of dune-lite formations (man made?) set at differnet angles that often seemed to hide all or a part of the putting surface. There seemed to be a lot of Foxxy type par 4's. All that on what would otherwise be considered a parkland course. Odd. At least on TV The Grove doesn't seem to fit into any of the usual categories. Very interesting.

I hope they don't start making big changes just because Tiger shot 300 under.

If one wanted to change the course to reduce Tiger's dominance, then it should be shortened, to diminish his advantage in length, and then make the greens slow and bumpy, to mitigate his putting skill.

They should play on a muni par 3 course, and everyone could be competitive. At least the field could stay close to Eldrick.
