American Clubhouse Quiz #4
« on: September 28, 2006, 01:22:10 PM »
I thought Peter's quizzes were fun, so I cut and pasted
clubhouses from my collection of crappy pictures taken of the
courses themselves.

These will have far fewer famous clubhouses.  The first 10 I
would call the 'easier' ones, and the last 6 are much harder (I think).

#1:

#2:

#3:

#4 (from side):

#4 (a little closer up from side):

#5:

#6:

#7 (RV golf trip?):

#8 (I left more of the hole in, since this is the back of the clubhouse):

#9:

#10 (same here, I left a bunch of the hole in to help):

And now the 'Hard' ones:
#11:

#12:

#13 (from 10th tee):

Another of #13, further down by pool area (from 15th fairway):

#14 (Clubhouse at left, taken from 9th tee, dogleg right.  One person here knows this course well, but even he
hasn't seen it like this.):

#15 (big sign w/club name is scratched out.  No way anyone gets this one w/o help):

#16:

Jeff, you rascal.   :o  Well done!  I didn't think anyone would
get that one, even with help.  A wedding reception was
going on on the deck at this quite-busy place (near the Shore in southern NJ).

Tyler, yes on both.

Scott, I like the hole better in your photo. A black hole is more becoming than the "Hollywood" sign that sits there in reality. From my collection:

#8 would be the "sister" club to my home course, on the opposite side of the country.  Their logo (which is visible in the photo to the very, very eagle-eyed) might be more appropriate for our course, though!

These are total guesses. Is #3 Rolling Green? And  #7 Tehama in Carmel??

Rolling Green's clubhouse is visible in the "My Home Course" section of this site . It appears in the background of #9. I can't make the photo show up here.

I only know one place where a member could wear that Illini-colored outfit out in public...

Therefore, I suspect #5 is the home club of our beloved Illini alumnus...

Is that Sea Oaks for real?

Views of #9 must make a certain group of 12 misfits nostalgic.

Tehama was my guess for #7 as well... and Wild Horse for #2 also...

Is #10 The Preserve, also near Carmel, CA?

Man the rest I can't get.    And there may be some I should know.

David guessed one right.

Peter is right on #5 and #8.

SPDB on #9, too.  (Yes, Sea Oaks.  I guess I underestimated how well known this course is, not being a local).

Huck, yes x 3.

I got an e-mail from a non-GCA member who got #13 and #16 (slight coincidence that I've played w/him at both).

Clues to come later for the 'ungottens'.

#8 is bewitching.

and #6 is only a slight deviation on the aforementioned Sea Oaks. Its technically not exclusively a clubhouse.

Stabbing away wildly, since I have only been to Pinehurst in the state, I'm guessing that #1 must be something like Charlotte Country Club  (skyline, flag and Scott's home state clues)--someone else can probably nail it down more...

Jeff and SPDB got it.  The 'slight deviation' for me was but a few hours apart on the same day.

Peter,

Nice job on the flag-spotting, too bad the skyline was an optical illusion (due to poor picture and worse picturetaking) from the many smokestacks on the clubhouse.

Despite JK's 'cheating', #1, #3, #11, and #13 are all former pro stops (as #6 currently is and #5, #8, #9 occasionally were), with #1 being part of Byron's 'history'.

#1, #3, #11, #12, #13, #16 all share the same 'flag'.

#1, #3, #12, #13 all share the same architect (as with #5, #6, #8).

As of next year, #1, #3, #12, #13 (and #5) all will have had recent restor/renov-ations.  Only #5 and #12 share the same restor-renov-ator.

#14 was designed by a GCA MFA, though he may have never
seen the clubhouse and surely never saw the hundreds of
homes surrounding this course.

#16 is Near and Dear TMH.

I find it hard to believe you would have gotten #11 without some creative 'browsing' behind the scenes.  Not exactly a course talked about much.

Is #1 Carolina Country Club? All those clubhouses around Charlotte/Raleigh, etc. look exactly alike, viz. #11 (what is it, BTW).
