You and 3 Ryder Cuppers
« on: September 26, 2006, 02:09:08 PM »
On another thread, I posted that I'd pick Tiger, Clarke and Harrington for a round of golf and dinner after.  Olazabal is the alternate.

Who would you pick and what insight does this give us on the prevailing Ryder Cup dynamics?

I'd take the three Irishmen if it's just the boys, replace Tiger for one of them if spouses are included.

This gives no insight other than the obvious FACT that the Irish are the most fun people on earth, with only Aussies coming close.

 ;D ;D

In any case I do get your point though and it is a good one... our guys are cold-blooded un-fun killers for the most part, theirs are fun and have better perspective.  But could this also be why ours win majors, theirs win Ryder Cups?  And what is the most important goal of a professional golfer?

Clarke, Westwood and McGinley.  Any of the 24 will be better than anyone I've ever played with.  I play golf for fun (though fun for me means serious competition, with a smile) and those three strike me as guys I'd have fun with during and after the round.  Of course I'd love to play with Tiger but I'm not sure how much fun it can be playing with someone who has such complete focus on his own game.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Nice thread...Shouldn't you be driving down to Johnson City and reporting on the Tillie outing.  Can we pick dead Ryder Cuppers...I'd pick Payne Stewart just so I could tell him how much I missed him....puke..

Clarke, Donald, Tiger - w/Casey as the alternate.

One thing that drew me to this site was that I didn't see us as a bunch of golf fans who sit around the bar discussion our fantasy picks.  Don't we endanger the future of great architecture if even we buy into the PGA scene..

But Michael, that's always going to be the case for me in any group except those in which you are present.  Just ask my wife...

She has described Mike many times as "the handsome one."

It is terribly sad that there is virtually no mention of any Americans as a dinner companion. . . . . .

As our current American crop is obviously wanting, how about if we vector off a bit and choose which three Ryder Cuppers - regardless of when they played - to have dinner with.

David Feherty
Darren Clarke
Fuzzy Zoeller

Obviously, Feherty can (now) be the designated driver.

We just have a rather dud crop these days.  But good question taking it all time....

Palmer
Nicklaus
One Irishman to be named.

The latter for the fun, the former two for idol worship.

Demaret and myself against Bjorn and Clarke. Best Ball, I will just stay out of Jimmy's way.

The Haig has to head this list, no?

Darren Clarke and Arnold round it out. Quite a mishmash, but what the hell.

PERFECT!

Just replace Arnold with Jack for me.  Hero worship is a powerful thing.  But great call re the Haig... and Clarke.

Vaughn Taylor, Brett Wetterich, and JJ Henry.

But Dan, can you EVER do that?  I mean please, sure those three wouldn't add to your troubles, but you could dine with me and two of my kids and the Huckabys would spend the whole time fending off your admirers.

I'd pick Garcia, Clarke and Crenshaw...if you dont let me have Crenshaw because he's from the '99 squad, I'll take DiMarco.  I gravitate toward the lively colorful  and passionate guys...except Crenshaw, I would just sit there and let him tell stories while I poured glasses of port.

Bottom line:  The European team is more endearing.

That said, JJ Henry does look like a cabbage patch doll:
