Why is mississippi dunes so un-fun?
I feel it has real variety. I know like others have said they do from time to time have conditioning issues, but there are wide open holes and narrow holes, long holes, short holes. It seems like you have to be on your game or it could beat you up. But the variety and style seem great. What am I missing?
Stoneridge is still better.
StoneRidge is WAY better. They're not even remotely in the same league, in my opinion.
I don't have time to tell you everything I dislike about Mississippi Dunes, beginning with No. 1 (the short grass on the approach should be on the uphill-side left, not on the right) and ending with No. 18 (the cart path in Position A off the tee; the long grass in the middle of the fairway on the hill; the blind approach).
Let me tell which holes I will miss never playing again: Nos. 2, 4, 16 and 17 -- three par 3s and a short par 4 ... all of which can reasonably be played via the aerial game. 17 even allows a running approach; I think it's the best hole on the course, along with 16.
That leaves 14 other holes -- none of which I will miss in the slightest.
Here's the basic reason why (evident on Nos. 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15): The guy who built the course was an amateur. He built raised green after raised green (on a windy site) that CANNOT BE HIT VIA THE GROUND GAME! The approaches to those greens are so steep that a ball hit into the slopes will DIE there, and never bounce up onto the greens.
All the builder needed was (1) a professional architect, and/or (2) a protractor.
Maybe he can hire a professional, someday, to fix things (or, better yet, to start over -- beginning with making better use of the river). It's a nice piece of land.
