Ryder Cup tape delay
« on: September 22, 2006, 09:18:00 AM »
There is nearly 11 hours more coverage by tape delay.
Am I weird in just not wanting to see tape delay? I would rather follow leader-boards on the net.

Thanks, Bill! I can turn my TV off now and get back to my office! That's much more fun!  ::)

And to answer your question, YES I think you are weird for preferring to follow it on the internet  ;D

Bill, Hi Def (I think, right Voytek?) coverage on Universal HD beats the internet.  It pretty much had to be tape-delay because the matches started at 3:00 ET and Midnight PT.

John - yes, TRUE Hi-Def. Should be Hi-Def on NBC over the weekend, too.

Although, being a nut that I am, I got up at 5 am today and watched matches on the Internet on a 2.5" x 2.5" screen.

I prefer to watch live sports.

Screw tape delay.

Every shot (almost) is available via live video at www.pga.com.

I can understand tape delay the first two days; as JC says, the coverage otherwise would go from midnight to 10am or so here on the west coast.  That's not exactly prime time.

What I don't get is they seem to also be tape-delaying it ON SUNDAY... or at least that's what the current TV listings say - coverage begining at 9am our time.  That's what, 5pm Ireland time?  Thus must be delayed... and that is patently stupid.  They sure as hell don't tape delay the Open here, and it's great for us early risers to watch....

TH

ps to Dan - thanks.  But that won't help me to get it on the big screen this weekend...  :'(

Dan - you are so correct.

BTW, it would seem that my dorky local newspaper - the esteemed San Jose Mercury - might have this wrong.  They list a 9am PDT start - website shows 4am.  Newspapers are never wrong, are they?

I agree wholeheartedly with Doug on this. Ticked me off.

Now of course there is a special circle in Dante's inferno for those who give away sports scores....

But come on, do any of you really expect to go the entire day without hearing these scores?  Can you really resist the temptation to check, to watch live via the streaming video?

That is if you are interested in the event... of course you don't count, George.

But I'd bet anything against shivas going the whole day without knowing what happens, for example.  Methinks we can lighten up on Bill.

I've been listening to the radio commentary which, although exteremely jingoistic ("CASEY HAS MADE THE PUTT!!!  HE'S MADE THE PUTT!!!!), is kinda fun.

For the FBD and the rest of the real Scottish contingent, duid you hear the follwing exchnage begtween the BBC reporters this morining?

BBC English guy #1:  "There's a Saltire (Scottish Flag) flying but there are no Scottish players on the team!"
BBC English guy #2:  "Er, how about Monty?"
BBC English guy #1:  "Monty?  He lives in Surrey, doesn't he?  He's hardly Scottish."
BBC English guy #2:  "I think he played some of his early golf on the West Coast of Scotland."
BBC English guy #1:  "Really?!"

Priceless...... ;)

Rich,
I haven't been following the radio, but checking in LOTS on the website. Work is the curse of the Drinking Classes...

BBC 'English' Guys: Well put!

Big red,
we aren't getting the live video streaming (radio only) on the 'european' section of the website, so don't feel too hard done by...

Eric,
you're quite right. It's our corporate gateway which is disallowing me from accessing the stream. Bandwidth issue or something (Big Brother more like!)

FBD.

You will not believe this but even the PGA network on XM is tape delayed despite their ads and constant reminders it is live.  I thought I would be clever a schedule a little outing out of the office so I could listen live for an hour...Probably my first true dissapointment with XM.  They have a live feed of BBC radio for The Open and it is better than TV...This is good too if you don't know the outcome.

Who's the American on the PGA.com video coverage (he also does commentary for European Tour events on the Golf Channel broadcasts)? I think his first name is Jay?

I listen to it on PGA.com.  I tried watching it on television but turned it off when they went on for about a minute about a waterfall that was installed on one of the holes :P :P :P :-X

Just to clarify my own post, I wasn't angry, just a little annoyed. (Also at myself for looking at the thread when I knew there was a chance someone would reveal it.)

In a perfect world, it would be televised live on one channel and tape delay on another, so the viewer could choose. Maybe someday.
