Stoneridge is one of my favorite courses in the area.  What makes is better than many other area course are the conditions always top notch. They also let their fairways get hard to you can really hit some bombs here.

I also have found 2 other courses in the east Twin Cities that I like Mississippi Dunes and Loggers Trail.

It seems every thinks Mississippi dunes is hard or tricked up but I love it.

Loggers Trail is straight forward golf.  Good conditions and always fun.  Tips play way different than other tee boxed on some holes.

I hope to play Stoneridge again soon.

Just played this course a couple of days ago.

The best part about this course is the fairway condtions.

Firm, almost rock hard.
fast, tons of roll.
smooth, like carpet.
This is one of the best in the metro at least public courses.

It also really helps your ego.  350yard+ drives more than one time on the fairways.
If you live in the Twin Cities- give it a whirl.  This course is fun.

Inspired by your enthusiasm, Rick Shefchik and I ventured out to Mississippi Dunes 10 days ago -- to see if we liked it any better than five years ago, when we began a long period of shunning it, after playing it probably 20 times.

Long story short:

As I tapped in on 18, I said (and I quote): "Goodbye, Mississippi Dunes. See you in Hell."

Rather than make a long story long, I'll ask: What in the name of all that is good do you find to love there?

I think it's the most relentlessly un-fun golf course I've ever played -- and the most relentlessly un-fun golf course I'll never play again.

Why is mississippi dunes so un-fun?

I feel it has real variety.  I know like others have said they do from time to time have conditioning issues, but there are wide open holes and  narrow holes, long holes, short holes.  It seems like you have to be on your game or it could beat you up.  But the variety  and style seem great.  What am I missing?

Stoneridge is still better.

Jeff, Rick,

I may have a grudge against them but I don't see either Wilds or Rush Creek deserving of a top five spot on a Twin cities list. I'll grant that the selections of publics here are thin and the best are overpriced but IMO the Wilds is an average course that has been completely over-built, and Rush Creek is an extremely well groomed pansy. The greens are boring and the approach shots are more than forgiving. I would agree with the other courses on the list but would likely put Baker National above the other two. I also think that Keller is shortish but way underrated, it is a great course.

StoneRidge is WAY better. They're not even remotely in the same league, in my opinion.

I don't have time to tell you everything I dislike about Mississippi Dunes, beginning with No. 1 (the short grass on the approach should be on the uphill-side left, not on the right) and ending with No. 18 (the cart path in Position A off the tee; the long grass in the middle of the fairway on the hill; the blind approach).

Let me tell which holes I will miss never playing again: Nos. 2, 4, 16 and 17 -- three par 3s and a short par 4 ... all of which can reasonably be played via the aerial game. 17 even allows a running approach; I think it's the best hole on the course, along with 16.

That leaves 14 other holes -- none of which I will miss in the slightest.

Here's the basic reason why (evident on Nos. 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15): The guy who built the course was an amateur. He built raised green after raised green (on a windy site) that CANNOT BE HIT VIA THE GROUND GAME! The approaches to those greens are so steep that a ball hit into the slopes will DIE there, and never bounce up onto the greens.

All the builder needed was (1) a professional architect, and/or (2) a protractor.

Maybe he can hire a professional, someday, to fix things (or, better yet, to start over -- beginning with making better use of the river). It's a nice piece of land.

I don't know if they're better golf courses, but I'd rather play either Keller or Baker than the Wilds or Rush Creek.

They feel more ... authentic to me.

And, of course, they're both WAY cheaper.

I also would vote Baker and Keller higher than the Wilds or Rush Creek.  I enjoyed Mississippi Dunes, but one of my brothers simply hates it and won't go back.
