PENNARD REVISTED - front 9
« on: September 21, 2006, 04:17:39 AM »
I thought it was time to post more pix of Pennard since so many new folks have joined the site.

Yesterday was ~30 mph winds with firm conditions.  Not nearly as firm as July/August, but more than enough to add excitement to the game.  The course has yet to recover from the dry months, but in fairness Pennard never fully recovers from even the wet months!  I was very glad to see plenty of cattle back on the course munching the rough.  Though there were signs of minor cattle damage to greens.

#2.  Notice the front left bunker has been made just about visible from the tee.  Not sure how I feel about this as I am a lover of hidden bunkers.

Tee shot for #3.

View of the 3rd green

Tee shot #4.  This is one of those holes I think has been enhanced by increased distance.

The perfect drive to reach in two.

Unfortunately I foozled a a low running 6 iron into the bunker.

The 5th.

The 6th tee shot.

Pennard has more cows than bunkers.

The blind approach to the 6th from the left rough.

The view up Pennard Pill toward Oxwich Bay.

Many folks are short on the 6th.  This hole is an unsung gem.

Loads of people complain about this ridge which kicks grounders to the right.

Looking back down the 6th from the Castle tee.  The pole indicates the blind nature of this raised bowl green which doesn't gather balls.

I never tire of this view.

A closer look at the fairway of the incomparable 7th.

At this point a Hail Mary or two was appropriate.

The 7th green.

Just beyond the 7th green.

Approach to the 8th.

A view of the 9th green from the near left rough.

Ciao

Sean;

Now; if you accidently slay a steer with a slightly divergent 3-wood, do you have a bill, or a bar-b-que?  :D

Around Kentucky way, a really bad course is often called a 'ranch'. You may be giving this one a bad reputation here ..... sorry.

Actually, it looks like fun. So let me ask you a question: Why do you like 'hidden bunkers'? Since it only is 'hidden' the 1st time you play, isn't it really just a way to 'juice' poor suckers you bring to the course? Tsk tsk.

Due to it's height, is Pennard the windiest liks in GB?  Great report thanks Sean

A nice reminder of how interesting the early holes are at Pennard.  The back nine are the more spectacular but there is some wonderful stuff here, too.  Thanks, Sean.

Looks spectacular, thanks for the pics Sean.

I hadn't heard of Pennard before I found this site.  Looks like yet another place that I should visit - think I've got a space in my diary sometime in the next ten years!
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Interestingly, a lot of these really characterful or quirky courses start with the letter P: Pennard, Painswick, Perranporth, Prestwick.  Is it the most fecund letter?

Excellent photos Sean!

I love the 5th hole - I snap hooked my shot so far that, although I was pin high, I still had a full wedge for my second. I did however make an extremely satisfying (and lucky) 3.

Tony,

I would say Perranporth is windier than Pennard. They are similar heights but Perranporth is fully exposed to the Atlantic winds whereas Pennard is (very) slightly sheltered as it is on the east of the Gower peninsula. I don't know of any other genuine links that are so high up.

The only other high altitude links that I can think of is Gullane.

Southerdown is higher and has(had) hinged flagsticks to keep them marking the hole. Of the courses I played in Wales Pennard is #1.

Peter, did you play Royal Porthcawl?  I loved that place, but I think a spirited match at Pennard with good friends would be more exciting.  Porthcawl is a great course, many super holes, but it's a bit pricey these days.

Porthcawl, Pennard, Tenby, Aberdovey, Harlech, Nefyn. My rating question: Is it fun? Pennard has it in spades. In comparison, Royal Porthcawl was a notch.

Sean, thanks as always.  As you would say, Pennard always looks to me a real cracker!  ;)
