How much better.....

....that course would be if only they would let me.....

Which famous course would you like to get your hands on as an architect, to turn it from a good course into a great one, and what would you do to achieve this?

I really do not think that way often.  I try to appreciate other courses for what they are, not what they're not.

If you re-read The Confidential Guide, the course I most wanted to fix was Yeamans Hall, and we did get the chance to fix it, not by redesign but by restoration.  The three holes at SFGC have been on my list for a long time, as well.  But I don't want to blow up other people's courses and stamp my own signature on them, even if they ARE a wasted opportunity.  I would rather just design a new one somewhere myself.

I would love to get my hands on Augusta National.....and put it back to the way it was 10 years ago.

Tom,

What precisely will the restoration project at SFGC entail?  I haven't played there in 6 years and am curious whether the 3 remodeled holes (is it 13, 14, and 15?) will remain recognizeable to me if I ever get back (and that's a big if).

Aaron,

It is 13,14,15 (and it is completed) and I had a tough time picturing the holes as they were going to be before they took all the trees down.  I played there again after they took the trees down but before the work was done, and it is very different.  From all accounts I have heard, for the better.

Is 14 still a drive and a pitch hole to that tiny little green?

Aaron:

The 13th hole is the restored "little Tillie", a short par-3 played from the 13th tee as you knew it to the tiny green on #14 you spoke of.

The 14th hole is a short par 4 playing from behind that green, down to the 13th green as you knew it.

The 15th plays up across the old 14th fairway and through the trees to a new green near what was the 15th green.
