#1 is the South course at Torrey Pines, in La Jolla, CA,
designed by Billy Bell. Torrey Pines hosts the Buick
Invitational on the PGA Tour, where one round is played on
the North course. The South course will host the 2008 U.S.
Open, after it was Reestified, and lengthened considerably to
a whopping 7607 yards with a CR of 78.1.
the web site is here:

new "squiggly" bunkers refers to Rees Jones trademarks.
"Pine"
"Tori" Spelling, "Torii" Hunter, and Rams WR "Torry" Holt,
who starred at NC State near me.
two references to Mickleson's lost ball on the 17th(?) during
a playoff at the Buick recently.
I believe this is also where Craig "Stadler" played a shot from
his knees on a towel in front of the TV audience who caught
him on it. I believe it violates an "improving your stance"
rule.
Popular area for "hang-gliding" off the cliffs.
"Longs for John Major reversed" must be "pines for Torrey[sic]"
Ewing, Iverson, Mutombo, and Harrington are all former
Georgetown "Hoyas" (prononuced like "Jolla").
from another thread, supposedly Doyen Tom Paul looks like
Andy Williams, whose name used to be attached to the PGA
Tournament here.
"nude beach" lies below the cluffs here
#2 is The Shattuck GC, in Jaffrey, NH, designed by Brian
Silva. Shattuck is reasonably known (apparently only by me)
as one of the hardest courses in the country for high
handicappers (bogey golfers, technically), due to it's 153
slope from the "only" 6764-yard back tees. Only a handful of
courses in the country have slopes above 150 from the tips,
though 8 (not 7 as I said before) of them have been shown
as AOTDs.
The "king" of difficulty for bogey golfers is Ko'olau on Oahu,
in HI, which tips out at a 162 slope, though I heard that the
course has been softened since.
Previous AOTDs with 150+ slopes from tips:
Pine Valley -153
Blackwolf Run (River) - 151
Castle Pines -150
Desert Highlands -151
Kiawah (Ocean) - 152
Crosswater - 150
PGA West (TPC Stadium) - 150
Tobacco Road - 150 (though I think it's been reduced a little
via a re-rating from {I guess} changes made)
Marriott's Lagoon Legend is known for it's 152 slope
other courses (some of which will be AOTDs) with 150+
slopes include The Honors Course, La Paloma in AZ, Naples
National, 2 courses at Desert Mountain (Chiricahua and
Renegade), Jeff Brauer's Colbert Hills in KS, and Whistling
Straits (Straits course).
Interesting that 4 of the courses are Nicklaus designs and 5
are Pete Dye designs.
Ross's course at The Balsams Resort was my original choice
for a course in NH, but it's aerial was not good. Could barely
make things out.

first AOTD from NH
"elite 150 slope club"
Silva was maligned for his Ross restoration of Wampanoag in
CT, but has since been hailed for other Ross resorations. He
is the "Raynor copier" architect at Black Creek in TN.
"big, green, smart athletes" = NH-based Ivy League
Darmouth U. sports team nickname, the "Big Green".
"Clayton Moore's equine companion = "Silver" (Silva). Moore
played The Lone Ranger
popular food fish = haddock (sounds like Shattuck)
Rob Lowe and Jodie Foster played incestuous siblings in the
movie based on "John Irving's" "Hotel New Hampshire".
NH known for it's "granite" quarries.
does NH have high "taxes"?
Josiah Bartlett (2 t's) was the President of NH from 1790-
1794, when the title was changed to "Governor". He was the
2nd person to sign the Declaration of Independence after
John Hancock.
Josiah Bartlet (1 t) is the fictional U.S. President from "The
West Wing", who hails from NH (where he was Governor).
No doubt and inspiration from the original JB.
I don't get the connection to Shattuck from Alice Water's
organic restaurant, Chez Panisse.
Whew!
