Steve,
I'm glad you liked it.  I'll have to find those old posts.  Did Forrest see them?  I don't think he is on line.  He's off to Maui trying to get us some work  ;)  Truth be told, he was sent there by our wives and told to not come home until he gets us some work  ;D

I'll let him know you liked it!
Mark

Those are pretty much Trent Jones' own top five picks from his book.  Although, since he was not holding himself to just public courses, he had Peachtree in there (in place of The Dunes, I think).

Valderrama is public access??  Are you sure?

I really enjoyed the Wigwam Gold renovation.  Forrest was nice enough to come out and meet us at the finish for a drink, so I got to complain in person about those mounds in the prime landing area of the otherwise flat fairway on #18!  :o   Forrest said the owners wouldn't let him take those mounds out, too bad.

It's a really strong layout and Forrest has improved it dramatically with cool stone walls in front of the greens beyond ponds, very handsomely done.  The greens are midsized in general, and feature some wicked contours and deep bunkering.  It's one of those courses that looks easy, plays hard.

Valderamma is open to those in certain travel groups sponsored by agencies like Perry Golf.

I don't think one can just walk on there.

Tom,
You can get on Valderrama.  I've played it a few times and don't recall having to get too creative to do so.  Would you put Ballybunion New on that top five list?

Bill,
Glad you liked The Wigwam.  Forrest probably liked those mounds and used the owners as an excuse  ;)

Bill M:  A lot of Trent Jones courses fall into the category of "looks easy, plays hard" as you said.  I think that's probably one of the reasons his star is not ascendant today ... most golfers seem to prefer it the other way around, as Dr. MacKenzie tried to make it.

Tom Doak:

What would you say some of the best techniques to use are that make a golf course look hard and play easier than it looks?

I'd say stuff like hiding safe areas with bunker faces (or other contours) and such and maybe some clever use of scaling and such that distorts distance perception.
