Aldarra vs. Tumble Creek
« on: August 28, 2006, 12:33:35 AM »
#1.. TC 1-up...as much as I loved the first at AD I loved the natural and appealing look of TC. Well done tom!

#2.. AS...AD wins with a better green.  I love hte barn in the background too!

#3.. TC 1-up...An amzing par-4 tops a great par-5.  I loved the hole at AD but TC gets this one.

#4.. TC 2-up...An average hole for a course the calibur of AD does not beat an amzing hole overlooking the mountains and river at TC

#5.. TC 1-up...I love this hole at Aldarra, even though I bogeyed here.
 :P

#6.. TC 2-up...I like Aldarras ittle par three but a great risj reward par four at TC wins this battle.

#7.. TC 1-up...Aldarra had a great par-5 that begins a great stratch of holes.

#8.. AS...Aldarras hole is stunning.  Period.

#9.. TC 1-up...Arguably the best hole at Tumble wins over a smallish par-3 at AD.

#10.. TC 1-up...Pretty much the same type holes.  Uphill dogeleg right with bunkers guarding the insdie of the dogleg.  TC's hole is better but the green doesntcompare to AD's.

#11.. AS...I love this par-5, risk reward at AD.  Beautiful.

#12..  TC 1-up...The final, really really strong at TC IMO.  Maybe 18 too..

#13.. AS...AD had a great downhill par three where TC has a median par three where the green does not save this short hole..

#14.. AD 1-up...A great par-4 at AD.  Its not often you can make birdie on a hole when your 9-iron goes 2 feet off the ground.
 ;D
Nah, a really solid hole in which fairway bunkers are great and I just got lucky
 8)

#15.. AD 2-up...An amzing par-3.  Nuff said.

#16.. AD 2-up...Both good holes and usually TC would win except Im not a big fan of the water hazard.

#17.. AD 2-up...Both good holes again excpet the green for Tumble saves it.

#18.. AD 3-up...Aldarra has an amazing finishing hole which IMO tops that of TC.

Aldarra wins, 3-up.

Now I just need to play Sahalee...
 ;D

Shocking news! Fazio triumphs over Doak on GCA

That's it Jordan! "Hi, I am Jordan Wall of GCA.com" is no longer the number one pick up line here.

I think I would like to hear from Sean on this thread.
Sean, have you played these two?

Garland,

I have not played Tumble Creek. Young Jordan has played each once, so all of his thoughts are a first impression basis.

For someone who picked up the game 2 years ago, Jordan was quite impressive.

IMO I thought each course was very different and I liked both of them.  Fazio does on hell of a job with hiding the cartpaths as some holes we couldnt find them.  On the 8th hole we were talking about it and Bob looks at me and says "where IS the cartpath on this hole?"   was like, all this fuss over little things like subtle containment and it did not bother me one bit.

I liked the look of the bunkers better at TC more than AD.
The greens, IMO, were equally interesting.

And, for only playing 2 years I am decent.
Played well.
Shot 79, but ask Sean, was so close to a 68

Jordan,

I notice how you seem to prefer the holes you played well at Aldarra. Especially your bird at 14 with a nine iron approach to 3-4 feet which did not get more than 3 feet off the ground. And you admitted it to those GCAers who monitor you on this site!!!

It must have been an disappointment for you, not having the course architect to play with.

Great day. I have not seen Tumble Creek but it must be amazing because Aldarra is very special.

Thank you Sean, Jordan and Brad.

Jordan's scorekeeping on his own ball is as enthusiastic as his enthusiasm on this website.  After birdieing the very difficult 18th, he declared he shot a 76. After a quick recount, it was a 79, and after a more in-depth recount last night, it was more like 81.

Not true!!

I said "that shot was for 76 (from 156 yards w/ 8-iron to a foot).

I had 77.  We counted 79.  In depth too.
I just missed a reload

NOT AN 81 Sean!!!!!!!!!!!
 ;D

Adam,

It truly was a great day.
It was very cool to meet another GCA'er. Bob, and I have caddied for Sean before but it was funner not being around some of the stuffiesh-type members of Seattle as whenn I caddied for him...
The holes I played well were actually really good holes, IMO.  I doubled 15 and thought it was one of the better par-3's I have ever played.
I was surprised as I heard the course was overly difficult but if you have decent carry distance the course shouldnt really harm you.  Some hole it was 240ish to the fairway, and on #3 that carry was uphill

Ryan,

He tried to call it a mulligan, even though it was the 4th hole. Not Kosher on GCA to be sure but since it was an anti-GCA day (Fazio, medal play match between he and I, took carts on 2 holes) I considered it, but declined.

It was a mulligan.
But at the end we counted it.
And I still found my first ball just didnt play it.

See PM.

Next time we'll play $5 a nine and you can keep score
 ;D
I asked if I could hit another and you said you didnt care but you never said it was a mulligan...and it wasn't.

You shot 79 right?

I'm a pretty new poster here.  I have been a member at Aldarra since its first summer (2001), so I've probably played the course around 100 times.  I flat out love the course and the club.

I've played Tumble Creek twice, and am in the process of buying a lot up there and joining the club.  I love the TC course as well.  I'll give some thoughts as to Jordan's comparisons and post those thoughts when I have a little more time.

One item of note --- the head professional at TC is Bill Tindall.  Bill is a great guy, and was the first head professional at Aldarra.

Patrick,

I'll be interested to hear your thoughts in comparing the two. Fazio and Doak memberships, cats and dogs living together. ;)

Check your IM.

Sean, I'm curious about how you took carts on two holes.  They rent carts by the hole at Aldarra?  ;)

Yes, Bill--you should see all the carts all over the place just in case anyone wants one on a given hole! ;) ;)

I believe the carts are used on #11/#12 (is that right, Sean?), the back-to-back par 5's straight up and then straight down the same hill, as a pace-of-play/cardiac arrest prevention acknowledgement...

When I've been there, it's just been the custom to take carts for those two holes, and walk the rest...

That's what the management needs to do at Rancho San Marcos for the grueling hikes between two sets of tees and greens at their course above Santa Barbara.  If not for those two hikes, the course would be a pleasant walk.  As a result, virtually all players take carts which is not 100% in that area otherwise.

Before Sean responds, lemme guess --- they grabbed a cart behind the 10th green, rode it up the hill (walkable, but steep) to the 11th tee, continued riding up 11 and down 12 and dropped it back off after the tee shot on 13.

There are typically a bunch of golf carts parked behind 10 green for this very purpose.  On hot days (like yesterday) I'll occasionally use it, and either leave the cart by the 11th tee or ride it on 11/12.

Last summer, about this time, as I was driving on the path from 11 green to 12 tee, I saw a big black bear on the path.  Faced with the choice of (i) speeding past the bear on the cart path, (ii) driving the cart through native grasses and face the wrath of the grounds crew (and others) or (iii) abandoning the cart at 11 green and walk down 12, I chose to abandon the cart.  Hit a pretty good tee shot on 12, too. ;D

Bill,

The walk between 10 green and 11 tee is pretty severe uphill hike (picture 13 green to 14 tee at Bandon Trails, only not quite as long), and 11 is a Par 5 that plays up hill followed by a par 5 that plays parallel back down hill (the weakest part of the routing, IMHO). They leave carts there so many people take carts for those 2 holes then drop the cart back off after teeing off on thirteen.

oops, our posts crossed.

Bully Pulpit has such an arragement for the three holes that play up into the hills of the badlands. I walked them and believe I did not hold anyone up as my foursome had to wait on each tee anyway.

How often do people walk these holes at Aldarra? If ever, are they perceived as slowing things down even though they might not actually slow people down?

I'd say more ride than walk but not by that much.  The course doesn't get that much play so if people do walk it isn't slowing anybody down..

Sean and Patrick are correct. I was with Sean and Jordan yesterday and we only gave in and took the cart for a few holes as we in the beautiful north west are not used to the heat we had yesterday. Please forgive us.

I could say we took the carts to get away from the bears but that would be bull and we would never want to lead the rest of you on. I can say that it felt good to sit down for a few holes on that course on that day.

As for the course, I had played a few Fazio courses in North Carolina a few years back and the terrain there compared to Aldarra is like night and day. Not possible to compare and say Tom's holes are predictable and "cookie cutter" molds. On a hilly terrain such as at Alderra, there are limitations on what you can and cannot do. I enjoyed it very much. Good variety and the holes were distincive. Some forced carries to greens and some where you can run it up. The sod faced bunkers on 17? (maybe 16?) were out of place and almost a sign that Tom F. wanted something different but they definitely did not fit in.
