Favorite features of a course...
« on: August 25, 2006, 02:18:19 PM »
What are things you guys (girls :)) really like in a golf course that makes a course extra good or extra special for you?
What are your favorite features a golf course course presents?

I personally love wild greens and huge fairways.
Large greens are fun too!
I love the ocean too...Does that count?

In spite of everything I feel like I should say in order to sound more intellectual, I have to say I am a sucker for elevated tees. Love the view, love the hang time, it's like candy.

The absence of artificially created ponds.

When each hole is as unique and different as the next. I also appreciate artistic and natural looking bunkers that make me think about my next shot.

Centerline bunkers, gently undulating fairways, openness, maybe, maybe . . . a little something like this:

The incredible no. of variables of what we can encounter, especially in links courses but also on more "North American" courses. A hole or course that gives me some options. "Can I flop this one and minimize roll or try to punch it into a bank and have it roll up?.

Most of all though, I like any course where I play well. Good memories.

Natural setting (no condos or houses)

Visible bunkers. (no hidden bunkers)

Tall rough (not tight, but way rough should be tall and wheat like.)

Hole variety.  Long, short medium par 3s,4s and 5s.

Holes that are not on top of each other so as to promote the feeling of seclusion.

Green complexes that allow / encourage you to pull the putter from 25 yards and in.  I love to putt from off the green.

Putts that scare the crap out of me.

Oh, and big trees that are older than our country.

4.  skinny little crossing creeks on second shots on par 5's that sucker you into actually thinking you might get a break on a marginal shot and hop over them.  (Plus, when they're really skinny, they're great for walkers because you can just hop over them.)
...
Shivas may like this one as much as I do. Creeks that you can plant a foot on each side of and play a shot out of the hazard that your opponents can't even conceptualize.  ;D ;D
