New Nicklaus course - West Coast of Vancouver Island
« on: August 18, 2006, 12:03:48 PM »

The Vancouver Sun today posted a story announcing a new development near Ucluelet which is in the midst of some spectacular coastline on mid way up the coastline of Vancouver Island. The area is about a 4 hour drive once you get off a ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo and would also be close to a 6 hour drive from Victoria.

Looks like it is primarily a housing development with the Nicklaus name to help sell the place. The area is very windy and known for its winter storms. Temperate climate would mean it would be playable most of the year.

I do not recall a lot of sand dunes in that area so I assume the course will be situated above the shoreline. I think it is worth following in the future as the setting can be spectacular and there would appear to be a chance to build a "links like" course out there.

Link to story below. Developer is unknown in these parts.

One word. Tsunami.

I hope those cliffs are high up, because anything under 50 feet will be levelled if Indonesia was any indication.

Bob,

Can't seem to find the article.  Did you save it in a pdf by any chance?

Thanks,

Andrew

Bob,

Thanks for the link. It sounds like it has the potential to be a great course that’s for sure.

On another BC Nicklaus note, I read somewhere that he was finishing off that course he designed on James Island (since only 10 holes were actually constructed). http://www.vladi-private-islands.de/sale/site/html/cms_de-sale_detail_en-504/

The Vancouver Sun article is no longer available.
