'Scotsman's Dream'
« on: August 20, 2006, 03:24:29 PM »
Has anyone seen/bought/even heard of this? I stumbled across it in ebay and was a tad surprised! There's a bit of a mention at the Tillie Soc website too.

Is it a case of a spot of vanity publishing or would it be worth trying to secure a copy?

Wow, I didn't realize it was that expensive.  My friend, Bob Walton, lent me his copy and I have yet to return it.  I better get it back next time we get together.  It is an interesting plot centered around a course designed in collaboration with Tillinghast, MacKenzie and Ross in upstate New York, Ithaca I think.  All and all a very nice read.

Martin, you'll have to go back quite a bit to find discussion of this book, but it's there. Hint: Ran contributed a bit to the discussion!

My vague recollection was that the people found it entertaining, but I doubt they thought it was worth $450.

Thanks Gents!
I guess I'll maybe wait until I see it remaindered in our local 'Publishers Outlet'.
Hopefully it'll be more like £4.50 than $450!!!
I couldn't help thinking of 'The Good Doctor Returns' when I read the plot. Maybe Geoff S should consider legal action..?

cheers,

I have one of the only 1000 copies, the culmination of a dream of the author, actually Warner Bott Berry, III.  He was captain of the Cornell golf team in college and is an astute player and lover of all aspects of the game.  He researched, wrote, and privately printed the book, which is a rather fabulous story.  I met Warner at SFCC and that day turned out to be one of my all time greatest.  We had breakfast with one of his closest friends (he introduced me to his friend "Bob Jones"-  Robert Trent Jones Jr.) and after breakfast RTJ Jr. took me out in a cart for a personally guided tour of San Francisco GC complete with an abundance of architectural comments.  He then took me into the storied locker room where he gave me a personally inscribed copy of one of his books on golf course architecture.
After our round, Warner and I sat and talked for a long time and I bought a copy of his book.
