BCC dates to a 1916 routing by Tom Bendelow of 9 holes, subsequently expanded to 18 holes in 1920, also by Bendelow. There are no club records documenting the original 9-hole layout or even the subsequent 18 hole facility.
A number of designers have subsequently been involved at BCC. In the mid-to late-1920s, English-born Wilfrid Reid and former Donald Ross construction supervisor William Connellan (the same designers of the highly-regarded Indianwood Country Club-Old Course in Lake Orion, Mich.) did unspecified worked on BCC.
In 1930, William E. Diddel, a respected Indianapolis-based designer who went on to design well over 200 courses throughout the Midwest, did some work at BCC – most likely limited to green renovation and bunker removal, since club finances in those days would not have allowed for more extensive work.
More work took place in the second half of the century. In preparation for the 1953 PGA Championship, Robert Trent Jones Sr. rebuilt bunkers and tightened some of the landing areas and added a handful of new back tees. In 1963, the Michigan-based team of Bruce and Jerry Matthews undertook more renovation. Finally, the club retained the services of Arthur Hills in 1985 for a variety of reovations.rk at BCC, mainly to bunkers, fairway alignments and tees.
