TPC Clubhouse Where is the Real Estate sales office?
« on: May 15, 2007, 09:03:55 AM »
I am not sure what to think of the monstrosity of a clubhouse the Tour built for itself at the TPC. It looks like something Trump or several other Real Estate types who name everything after themselves would build. I love that style of architecture more than most on here but isn't this so over the top. As they said on the Golf channel this morning the only thing it is missing is a waffle house.

I kind of agree.  I think that style of architecture is swell, and it fits well with the whole "Florida feel", but it does seem a little over the top.  It's kind of an "Extreme Makeover: Players' Edition".

I found it kind of clashy at the end as the ceremony began.  Bagpipes and a Mediterranean clubhouse, in Florida?  The Florida and Mediterranean works together, but the bagpipes, ehhh, I don't know.  It may be tradition, I don't know.

Oh you guys, it's not "over the top", it's way over the effin' top".  It's what's wrong with american golf in a nutshell. Overkill, over-done in every possible way.  I haven't seen the finished product but I know from Mike Vegis that the little old shop at Kiawah Ocean was razed and to be replaced, hopefully less of a replacement than the TPC. (Sorry, Mike)

Jupiter Hills (an LCC member told me) razed their clubhouse to build an AUGUSTA! replica only bigger and better, like 40,000 sq. ft. better.

What ever happened to less is more?

Time to stop this stuff, I think.

My favorite quote I heard over the weekend about the clubhouse came from The Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman who referred to its 77,000 square feet as "Understated elegance".  I almost fell off the couch laughing.  I was waiting for the next description, speaking of it's "cozy charm". ;)

I call it a Monument to Excess.

Guys it does not matter what Kelly says. What matters is how she is dressed when she says it. lol

To be fair, The Ocean Course clubhouse was built in 1990 for the Ryder Cup and was to have an expected life of about 5-7 years.  Well, 16 years later, we've about to open a very nice clubhouse, one that we went to great length and expense to make it look like it fit the oceanfront location.  We don't have photos of it yet as we have the Senior PGA Championship in two weeks and it's surrounded by hospitality suites and bleachers.  However, I would say is a but more subtle than Ponte Vedra Beach...

No wonder all those PGA tour players are pissed off.  They are seeing that all those PGA rating dollars have been dedicated to building that monstrosity of a building instead of finding its way to thier palms and pockets.

Although, I'll bet Tiger has a bigger house than that somewhere...  ;D

The next maintenance expense for the super will probably be glow lamps, to counteract the shadow of the clubhouse.

I guess we now know where all the $300+ green fees to play the TPC have gone ::)

199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

I should have added more to my first post, but everything that I have seen regarding the new clubhouse for The Ocean Course is

-In line with the low-key nature of the Kiawah Lifestyle
-Several orders of magnitude more tasteful
-Several orders of magnitude less distracting

than the monstrosity of the TPC monument

In other words, I am pretty certain that it will not in any way generate the sort of head-scratching (or "Whatthehellweretheythinking?" surrounding Tim Finchem's palace.

Mike: How will they be setting up the course - will it vary based upon the wind or other conditions or do they have very specific parameters for tees and pin placements that they will stick with?

Kerry Haigh has the plem. course set-up at 7,205 but when I spoke to him last, that's just a starting point.  He'll adjust, up to 15 minutes before the first tee-time, depending on conditions.  If it's calm, they'll be moved back.  If it's blowing, he'll adjust accordingly, just as he did for the 1991 Ryder Cup.
