Your images never fail to put a smile on my face.  Thank you for taking the time and effort to showcase both your talent and these golf courses.

Aidan, fantastic, as always.

How is Hawtree's work at Royal Dublin coming along?  It tends to get criticized here, but I enjoyed the course.

Thank you for the kind words.

Tim....the changes seemed to have been very favourably received. An article will appear in the next month or two in Links magazine highlighting RD and the changes that have been implemented.

Aidan:

Your photographs are quite compelling and a just compliment is due I believe.  I have always thought your artistic use of depth of field is what separates you apart from many other in the bizz.  As I look over your work and especially in the photos in this thread, you have a great ability to compose a shot.  That isn't as easy as it sounds.  Many people do as well, however, they lose it in the end by attempting to capture the viewer's eye to a set focal point and miss out on the whole intent.  Your work draws the viewer into the shot through the combination of strong composition and an engaging depth of field.  As we look at the photos enclosed, the foreground starts our eyes and mind in motion and guides us right in the setting with a human scale sense because we can actually see the textures of the elements, the ever essential meat and potatos middle ground grabs our attention and is normally the main attraction and finally the background balances the composure and allows our eyes and minds to wander off into never-never land.  NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT! ;)  Now, my only wish is that I could afford you to photograph some of my work :'(

Hi Aidan,

A couple of questions.
Do you carry around a ladder to take pictures from?
Do you ever work in black and white?
Did you try to get the wave to line up with the back of the green at Waterville?

Enjoy your pictures.

Garland,

1.....No ladders. Not stable/ steady enough to shoot at half a second.

2.....While, I do not shoot B&W film, all images can be output in B&W.    What the difference would be if I started with B&W as opposed to converting is an interesting question and one I shall pursue.
3.....I waited patiently for as close to the perfect set as possible.

Glad you enjoyed the images.

Aidan.

Great pictures.

Do all of the bunkers at The Heritage look like that, with random geometric cuts?

Where else in the world has anyone seen a bunker that looks like that one?

What beautiful pictures.
They obviously took a long time.
Would you share with the gang, how many hours it took to snap those 4 seconds of pictures.

Am I exempt from being critical on work outside the country?

I don't like bunkers edges, especially artistic, that have no relationship to the surrounding land.

Oitavos - i like the surrounds better than the golf... maybe they could have been incorporated a little better?

Headford - did you tie the swan's leg to the bottom of the lake?  :)

Mike N:

I happen to know that Aidan placed that swan in the water and anchored it to the bottom of the pond...good god man, you didn't think it was real did you? ;)

I guess I don't know what you mean about the bunker edges at the Heritage, I think they relate quite nicely with the roof lines, dormers and edges of the housing track in the background! ;D  Looks natural to me ;)

Mike, hope your project is going well and you are having loads of fun.  Keep us up to date on progress, even photos of dirt are cool, especially for us architect types.

Those bunkers are far-out.  They certainly don't look natural, but they are very interesting.  Kind of golf's answer to the Cubist movement in painting.  If The Heritage is a fairly new golf course, my guess is that over time, maintenance will preclude the preservation of such strict, sharp lines, and the bunkers will begin to look more like those of Grande Dunes (a Rulewich course in Myrtle Beach), which is the closest look I've ever seen to this.

Mike,

If you include the plane rides, driving 2700 miles, sitting in pubs watching the World Cup while waiting for the sunshine, scouting time and shooting time  -  those 4 seconds too three and half weeks.

If you feel the need to criticize, away with you lad (that's Irish for "carry on").

At least you didn't accuse me of photoshopping in the swan. Just like the waves in Waterville, it took patience and timing.

The Heritage has been open for about 5 years. The conditioning and maintenance of the course is as fine as I have ever seen. Sam Torrance, playing in a seniors tournament a couple of years ago said the tee boxes were in better shape than most greens he had putted on.

Which "heritage" are we celebrating there?

The long and distinguished history of Irish jigsaw-puzzle design?

One would need to go back in time actually, I was always interested in some early photos of Riviera as some of the bunkers from the first couple of years had that look. Of course this is far more pronounced.

Aidan-
Nice pics, I like the Park course best.
