One of my playing partners at Lederach was displeased at a couple of uphill approaches that demanded long shots to a narrow front to back green. I said to him "I hope you are going to tell Kelly." When I asked him what Kelly's response was he said something like "It is what it is."
Today I played Beechtree which is among my favorite public courses. I was thinking that it was a very "engineered" course. I imagined that Tom Doak thought a lot about most all of the shots that could be hit into the greens and created a challenge for each. The challenges he created are fun and varied but not "headscratchers".
But I think Kelly may not always be thinking of all the possible shots when he designed some holes. He leaves open some uncertainty which reminds me of my experience overseas.
I like both of these courses, but believe we need more of the Lederach because it is very different.
What is your take? Engineer most all the options or confound the player a little?
