From the same guy that wrote "Royal Livermore" in his Open preview:

Seriously, is it me or did the lauded compliments for Royal Liverpool make you cock your head and ask, "Say what?" Sure, the unseasonable drought didn't help, but the course had the appearance of a low-end muni. Maybe we're just accustomed to the plush conditions here in the U.S., but I can't imagine wanting to endure the course if a major wasn't on the line. Near Dallas, there's a terrific course called the Tribute that includes 18 replica holes of the most famous in Europe. But how many golfers would play on a regular basis if officials there copied Royal Liverpool's curiously applauded brown-out dust bowl?

:-[  I guess this is why folks say we Americans just don't get it.

How many golfers would want to play a Dallas replica course, with or without the presence of Royal Liverpool?

Also: "lauded compliments"?  ??? "Say what?" indeed.

I wonder of those replica courses add yardage each time the hole they have copied do???

Just like (insert famous hole)... only 58 yards shorter.

Tom, I played there with Jeff one month ago.  And paid three figs to do so.

Don't get it!?! Try this lead.
"The 135th British Open served up a cornucopia of absolutes. Some were mere formalities (Tiger Woods winning when leading after 54 holes) while others were a bit more surprising (the clueless British fans). It was most worthy nevertheless, with thrills and spills galore."
Clueless fans? I didn't hear a single "you da man".
I don't see how a writer from this country can decry another countries fans with a straight face.

He was referring to ppl taking pictures before and during swing of Woods.

I'd take the conditions at Hoylake or most other courses on the other side of the pond compared to the expectations of wall to wall green and an 18 hole game of jarts played at most places here.

I'll not soon forget the first time "You da man" was heard at the Open Championship.

I vaguely remember that it was Fred Couples driving a ball, and a fan called out: "You da man!"

The estimable Peter Alliss said something very much like:  "Oh, dear. They caught one of those cheap flights across."

This past weekend, I did note hearing one fan who called out "In the hole!" as Tiger hit an iron off the tee of some longer-than-400-yard hole.

Of course, maybe it was just a display of that famous dwry British humor.

Dan

I like "dwry."  A tyop or well-considered neologism?
